McCain is right. The border does need to be secured first and despite all the hate directed at him Chertoff has done a good job in building the fence. There is a need for a temporary worker program. Not amnesty, but a temporary worker program.

There is no such thing as a "temporary" program of any kind.

How about paying a "living wage" first.

“There is a need for a temporary worker program. Not amnesty, but a temporary worker program.”

How many? How many ‘temporary worker programs’ do we have now? Do you know? Do you know how many people we allow ‘legally’ into this country each year now?

Some of the DAILY work of USIS according to their own document:

* Conduct 135,000 national security background checks

* process 30,000 applications for immigrant benefits

* Issue 7,000 permanent resident cards ( Temporary workers! green cards -PER DAY)

* Welcome 2100 new citizens.

* Welcome 3500 new permanent residents.

McCain will never make a move to “secure the border first.” He is a liar on that one, for sure. All his actions prove it. His rhetoric is BS.

Amnesty IS the plan and always was. They are just waiting for a later date when they think they can force it through.

"McCain is right. The border does need to be secured first ..."

McCain has been dragged kicking to make the statement ... "I will secure the border first because it is what the people want." It is not what he believes or wants! Pandering.

But that's not what McCain wants. He wants amnesty.

A temporary worker program is only a band-aid to a much bigger problem: Mexico. (Plus, when have you ever heard of a U.S. government program that is actually "temporary"?)

With such a disparity of economic opportunity (maybe "freedom" is a better word) between the U.S. and Mexico, it's no wonder that Mexicans and others from further south are so willing to risk life and limb to illegally enter the United States. There are only two ways to fix this: either lower the U.S. to Mexico's level, or bring Mexico to the level of U.S. (or high enough, at least, that the inducement for Mexicans to leave their own country is reduced significantly).

I can live with that.. but do you understand why some of us want the border secured FIRST?

"Not amnesty, but a temporary worker program."

It's amnesty is you grant those here illegally, access to a temporary worker program.

There is a need for a temporary worker program.

That's what work visas are for. There is no need for new legislation, IMO.

You spot on. McCain is not a pie in the sky reality idealist. He is dealing with what can work. A good temporary worker system is possible with on the self technology. Think credit cards.

Those who think a 12 foot fense across our southern boarder will be the fix, have not been along our southern boarder. They would be the first to whine about all the prickly cactus plants going through their tennis shoes. The fact is we will not, because of the physical terrain, build a solid fense. You can't build fense in the middle of the Rio Grande. So much for pie in the sky. . .

We can secure the boarder with virtual boarder techniques which are still being developed. I challange my arm chair nay sayers to submit their virtual border devices to the United States Border Control. Otherwise, save their pissy statements that scapegoat McCain for our difficult southern border situation, to themselves.

Temporary worker programs seem unAmerican to me. Societies that rely on guest workers have problems with their large numbers of unassimilated, “temporary” visitors who have little long-term allegience to their host country.

I believe the reason America historically has been able to assimilate immigrants better than any other country in the world is that the folks who come here want to become American, and want to stay here and build a life. What we really need in my view is to secure the border, and then revamp our *legal* immigration processes. That way, instead of relying on guest workers, our workforce is filled with law-abiding Americans and aspiring Americans.
