Inside a 9/11 mastermind's interrogation
International Herald Tribune ^ | June 22, 2008 | SCOTT SHANE

WASHINGTON: In a makeshift prison in the north of Poland, Al Qaeda's engineer of mass murder faced off against his Central Intelligence Agency interrogator. It was 18 months after the 9/11 attacks, and the invasion of Iraq was giving Muslim extremists new motives for havoc. If anyone knew about the next plot, it was Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. The interrogator, Deuce Martinez, a soft-spoken analyst who spoke no Arabic, had turned down a CIA offer to be trained in waterboarding. He chose to leave the infliction of pain and panic to others, the gung-ho paramilitary types whom the more cerebral interrogators called "knuckledraggers." Martinez came in after the rough stuff, the ultimate good cop with the classic skills: an unimposing presence, inexhaustible patience and a willingness to listen to the gripes and musings of a pitiless killer in rambling, imperfect English. He achieved a rapport with Mohammed that astonished his fellow CIA officers.

Amazing insights in the article.

I find it typical that the Times had no compunction regarding revealing the interrogator’s name - but howled mercilessly when Ms. Plame was outed.

Anyone who believes the Press is fair lives in fairy tales.

OK. We need to know if the “extraction team” had a search warrant signed by a judge. We need to know if KSM was read his Miranda rights by the team. If not, the case should be dismissed and KSM should be permitted to return to his previous endeavors.

“came in after the rough stuff...” So, I am to infer that the “rough stuff” does work when used in combination with the “smooth stuff.”

I wonder who’s protecting “Duece Martinez” and why is his name printed in this article? Inquiring minds hope the answers come forth soon.

“Abu Zubaydah became compliant after 35 seconds” of water boarding... the shift from resistance to cooperation “was like flipping a switch...”

Very good article. Couldn’t help but notice how many times they railed on torture. What was interesting was at what point waterboarding turned into torture. To hear the commielibs one episode of waterboarding is torture.

This is what i’d call proof positive it works

I just sent them a Letter to the Editor:

It's amazing that in the "Inside a 0/11 Matermind's Interrogation" article of June 22, the IHT suffers no apparent qualms of conscience about indentifying the CIA interrogator as "Duece Martinez." Is this the same IHT that complained loudly that Valerie Plame's life was put in danger when Richard Armitage let out the fact that she worked for the CIA?

Cool article. Waterboarding works!! Reminds me of the time I listened to an Israeli former counterterrorism officer speak at my university and he told us about the interrogation of a senior Hamas member. If my memory serves, supposedly the story goes like this:

At first all the Hamas guy would say was his name, but then they brought in this guy under a code name who was an expert interrogator fluent in Arabic and knew as much about Islam to qualify himself as an imam, but he was not a Muslim of course.

So he comes to the Hamas guy and to get him to at least say something other than his name, he says, “OK, before we begin, let’s talk about what’s in the Koran.” So Hamas guy says “What do you know about that? I’m a scholar, I have it memorized!” So the interrogator says, “OK then, in which verse in such-and-such surah [I forget which one] is the letter meem [Arabic M] not present in any of the words?” Hamas dude is stumped...he has no idea. So the interrogator says “It was verse 128.” And they continue talking about this stuff and challenging each other to recite the Koran from memory.

Then one day this particular interrogator leaves, and another one comes in instead (I think this was planned). Hamas dude says “Hey, where’d the other guy go?” The interrogator tells him he had other things to do and won’t be coming back. Hamas dude is somewhat disappointed, because he liked being able to discuss the sort of things he was doing with the first guy. So he says to his new interrogator, “If you agree to bring the first guy back, I’ll tell you the names of all my recruits.” The second guy agrees. So Hamas dude spills the names of 500 men. The first interrogator never returned and the IDF now had the names of 500 wanted Hamas personalities. Hamas dude was furious.

That’s how this IDF guy told it, anyway.

Not sure how much of this story I buy. For one thing, KSM is known not to be particularly religious which was dwelled upon in the Yosri Fouda book. In there, it’s bin al Shibh who is constantly instructing KSM in basic Islamic behavior. There are a few other things in this article that don’t exactly jibe with other sources. Some of the stuff about Zubaydah. The other thing is the reference to how few Arabic speaking interrogators we have. There were plenty of Arabic speakers in the agency in 2003 and there was only one KSM to interrogate.

Mohammed met his captors at first with cocky defiance, telling one veteran CIA officer, a former Pakistan station chief, that he would talk only when he got to New York and was assigned a lawyer — the experience of his nephew and partner in terrorism, Ramzi Yousef, after Yousef's arrest in 1995.

and there it is... the author of Borat Obamas terrorist policy.

“”Poland is the 51st state,” one former CIA official recalls James Pavitt, then director of the agency’s clandestine service, declaring. “Americans have no idea.””

This is an interesting comment. Can anyone intelligently elaborate?
