In a McCain administration, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson would play a dominant role in selecting Supreme Court nominees and other judicial appointments, sources close to the McCain campaign and to Thompson tell us.
And why is Fred suddenly everywhere? These sources say that the agreement between McCain and Thompson is behind Thompsons resurgence in the national media in recent weeks. In a McCain campaign conference call with reporters yesterday on last weeks Supreme Court decision on terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Thompson -- without claiming such status -- played the role of a prominent McCain adviser.

Ironically, FR's owner later endorsed Huckabee, and that went over as well as when "true conservative" Duncan Hunter endorsed Huckabee. It was fun to watch heads explode over that one.
I was very disappointed in the options we were given on FR "polls" during the Presidential camapign. It was bad enough that the MSM wanted to dictate to us that the "only" viable candidates were "Rudy, Mitt, and Fred", but then this forum drank the same kool-aid. The FR polls generally consisted of questions like "If the Republican primary is tomarrow and the candidates were Fred Thompson or Osama bin Laden, who would you vote for?" It would be nice if the folks that ran this site stuck to the actual candidates in the race and not pitting the "potential" candidates they were rooting for against odious RINOs that had no shot.
Well, it sure didn't have any effect on Fred's conscience. As soon as McCain secured the nomination the only thing on the page at Fred's URL was the word "success."
Yeehaw!
How did Fred's efforts to destroy a geninue Republican in the primary "help this country"? All it did is help the D.C. status quo keep "their guys" in control. We saw exactly how "electable" Chafee was in November. You're naive if you think Fred had any other motivaition for doing it besides keeping on the good side of his "buddies" in Washington establishment.
It's a well known FACT you guys screamed bloody murder when the NRSC assisted Chafee in the primary -- given how many freepers vowed to never donate to them again afterwards, so don't try to pretend this is a minor issue.
Linc Chafee is so far left he makes Russ Feingold look conservative. That's not my opinion, that's data showing how the two scored with conservative organizations across the nation.
Fred acutally claimed he agreed with Chafee on "most issues". I wonder if Fred still thinks that's true with Chafee being a top Obama supporter now.
Fortunately, I'm sure Fred didn't actually BELIEVE the crap he spewed about Chafee. If he had, we could write this guy off as having joined the Judy Barr Topinka wing of the party.
Fred is about helping his Senate buddies keep the status quo in this country. Period.
Fred’s a loyal Republican, always was.

Fred was campaigning for Republican incumbents, it's that simple. Using the word "whoring" is really beneath your dignity here, Billy. I'll add in there was NOTHING in it for him to do so. He wasn't in the Senate, he wasn't running for President. He was just trying to make sure the GOP didn't lose its Senate majority. I supported Laffey, but you know and I know that ultimately neither was going to hold that seat.

Because we believed Chafee wouldn't remain a Republican after the election. We were right, and yours truly was the first to break the story on FR last year when Chafee left the party. But what does that have to do with Fred campaigning for Republican incumbents when again, there was NOTHING in it for him ? It'd be a different story were he still in the Senate and running for leader.

You're flogging a dead horse, Billy. Fred should've been applauded for going out there and campaigning in hostile states. He was trying to give Chafee the benefit of the doubt. It was Chafee that was the disloyal backstabber, not Fred.

Yeah, because we know how much better off we are with Harry Reid as Majority Leader now. Billy, do you even believe what you're spewing here ? C'mon, man.
I note that you didn't say "loyal conservative."
When I read what Fred writes about constitutional issues, particularly federalism, I find him to be a limited and local government kind of guy. He has a real grasp of the difference between a national, democratic, centralized government that directs one’s every move and thought from Washington DC and Sacramento for the “good of the majority” and a government that respects the retained, undelegated rights of the individual, a representative republican form of government with the limited police powers of regulation delegated to local elected government. He understands that the federal powers in the Constitution are enumerated to set forth that “so far Congress shall go, and no farther.” He understands that the Bill of Rights are not privileges gifted to the citizens, but limits on federal power from encroaching upon the unalienabl rights of the citizens.
I doubt John McCain has any inkling of any of this. Best leave the picks in Fred’s knowledgeable hands.
So what?
Fred is a good and sensible guy and that’s what matter!
Should you have prefered ...
True, but I do not believe him a disloyal one, either. He concludes by being a loyal Republican, you’re more likely to achieve Conservative goals. Unfortunately, as we have seen, that is not always the case.
We’re STILL waiting for Regulator to answer the question posted to him several times. Where could he be ?
I’m sooooooo excited. YAWN
EV, you beat me to it.
What I find intersting here is that McCain himself realized he had so little credibility on judges (rightfully so), that he had to turn that duty over to someone else.
In this I agree with John. Now, if only I could believe him.
If he wants me to believe he is going to wave his right to have whoever he wants, he barking up the wrong tree.
This man has changed his mind on every subject there is. Now I’m supposed to believe this idea won’t change and I can’t believe that for a moment.
