Obama criticizes McCain on offshore drilling
Last Edited: Friday, 20 Jun 2008, 3:32 PM EDT
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama is in Florida today.
He's here criticizing presidential rival John McCain's proposal to allow offshore drilling, saying, it "makes absolutely no sense at all." Obama says opening up the U.S. coastline to oil exploration would not give Americans any appreciable savings until 2030.
Instead, Obama said he would invest $150 billion over the next 10 years to create green jobs, particularly in the automotive industry and to improve the electricity grid so people can drive plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Sosha Security will be broke WAY before then - eh?
But where is Obama going to get $150 billion to invest in “green” energy?
Also, is this really an either/or situation? Can’t we drill more now, but still have an eye to the future technologies which will give us energy from other sources, in addition to fossil fuels?
We can turn this argument around on Obama. We’re not going to see substantial shifts away from fossil fuels before 2030 even if he gets everything he wants in R & D of new energy.
I have never in my life seen anything as remotely scary as the Barackchurin candidate.
Let's see. The choice is (1) invest in $150 billion in unproven green energy and “hope” that it pans out even though it cannot as of date replace fossil fuels and may never be able to replace fossil fuels or (2) produce more of our proven energy source which is oil, gas, and coal.
If (1) is the “change we can believe in”, I don't see the evidence of it being the best choice. I like (2) better.
so he wants to spend $150B of tax money to create the jobs HE wants. Your $, that you worked for is taken and given to someone else for jobs to fix a problem that doesn’t even exist. Socialism at work.
While I highly doubt his 2030 claim (more liberal lies), at least we know that we will have energy when the oil is produced.
When, if ever, will the unproven green energy produce enough energy to give us the required energy?
We cannot windmill ourselves out of this problem.
If the US announces it’s opening ANWR, the Gulf, and Montana/Dakota the price of a bbl. of crude will drop $15 in the first week as oil future paper loses value.. Also did it take 22 years to bring the oil out of the north range in Alaska? The fact that the media lets the haloed one get away with assinine pronouncements that have less basis in fact than the plot of a Doris Day Rock Hudson flick shows that McCain has absolutely NO CHANCE to win in November. If he gets 150EVs I will be shocked.
Barack is in a bind. The Sierra Club holds his manhood in a blind trust, so he’s reduced to saying these idiotic things. How can McCain possibly manage to lose this election?
I was afraid BHO would change his position to support drilling, which would take away a potential great issue for McCain. Looks like he’s digging in. Now if McCain would just get behind Anwar.........
I agree. Obama is on the losing side of this argument. The most stupid person in America can see the common sense of drilling for our own oil here in America if we have it. Anyone can see that this is just the logical solution to many problems including the high price of gas. I know Obama’s followers are idiots, but I bet even they see the wisdom in drilling here and now.
The RATS should do it for 'the children' - no?
Let's see, the problem is $4-$5 gasoline. Barry's solution is to create "green jobs" over the next 10 years so people can drive plug-in kiddie vehicles. How can he say this with a straight face?
Here is one DU’er questioning it:

I guess I’m just naive or something. I think of it so simplistically. Like with food. I can either go down to the store and buy tomatoes, or I can grow some in my backyard and not have to worry about someone else having to supply me with tomatoes. Strikes me as the same with oil. Why buy it when you can “grow” it in your own backyard?
Don’t get me wrong. We need a ton of innovation for new forms of energy. But it just seems like oil and natural gas could tide us over for 20-30 years while we get the other things up and running.
But hey — I’m no expert on world economy or futures speculation.
If I could drill in my own backyard, I would.
Me too!
Isn’t that what they said in 1978 or something? I sure would like to be saving right about now.
