On his show tonight, Dan Abrams drew attention to a quote from John McCain in an interview with Sean Hannity that flew under the radar for the past 3 months:
HANNITY: -- and then I understand you didn't get any medical help for nine days. You spent two years of this five-and-a-half-year period in solitary confinement. What does that do to a person, to spend that much time in solitary confinement?
MCCAIN: I think it makes you a better person. Obviously, it makes you love America. I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company, but probably the most important thing about it, Sean, is that I was privileged to have the opportunity to serve in the company of heroes.
In light of all of the political hay that the repubs have made out of Michelle Obama saying that seeing such enthusiasm in this election cycle had caused her to be really proud of America for the first time in her adult life, I think it is worth giving a second look. Does anybody think McCain didn't love America before he was a POW? No. It's interesting that both McCain and Obama used the qualifier "really" in their statements... although Michelle's comments are oft repeated without the "really." It's interesting how when lines fit or don't fit particular scripts the are or are not noticed. Obama's comment were pounced upon almost immediately, while McCain's comment wasn't noticed for 3 months.
And neither do I.
I don’t see the big deal. A lot of Americans, when they go abroad for the first time to a turd world country for any reason, develop a newfound appreciation for this country.
No comparison, end of story.
I see nothing even slightly questionable about his statement. This is an absurd thread.
No comparison and it certainly doesn’t put an end to criticism of Michelle’s comments.
Anyone who can not understand what McCain is saying in the context of his experience is either a wierdo, an idiot, or a pinko Obama apologist pretending for political purposes to have found the holy grail. As to whether this Oscar-nominated effort by MSNBC will have any effect on the heat that Michelle Obama has been getting is hard to say. If she screws up again, she’ll get heat. If she doesn’t, other campaign news will dominate the media— maybe even some real news. MSNBC is a media cesspool. Nobody watches it unless they are already of a certain persuasion, or are interested for intellegence purposes in what the “G— D-—America” crowd is saying.
McCain was 31 when he was captured.
I think what he is trying to say is that you don’t truely appreciate something until you lose it or are separated from it. And it’s true. The overwhelming majority of the people in this country take our freedoms and our liberties for granted. They’ve always enjoyed them and never had to fight for them. As Thomas Paine wrote, “That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly.” But take it away and it’s another story.
I think it is absurd that the libs are willing to try to use it.

I’m not a big fan of McCain, and I’m sure most of you haven’t noticed... LOL.
This is a poor choice of words, but I don’t read into it what others might.
With Michelle Obama, there was an implied slam at the U.S., as if it wasn’t worth respecting or loving until now.
With McCain it’s more like he never quite focused on his feelings for the nation until he couldn’t go home.
I had an inate love of our nation early on. I think it does reveal some of McCain’s character shortcomings to say what he did, the way he did, but I still don’t see his statement as a slam of the nation, which Michelle’s clearly was.
This is because Michelle made the statement TWICE. The first time she did NOT say "really", the second time the word was added to "clarify" her earlier speech.
