Liberalism turns people rotten (bumped)

Over the past few years, we've learned a lot about the differences between liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans. We've learned...

Republicans report having better mental health than Democrats,

Republicans have a more satisfying sex like than Democrats,

Republicans are happier than Democrats (no matter who is in office),

Republicans are more likely to graduate from college (and Dems are more likely to drop out of high school)

Republicans are more likely to marry and have children

And it marches merrily on like that. Study after study shows Republicans and conservatives have it better, or are better, or something.

You do occasionally have a study that comes out of a place like Berkeley that shows that conservatives are stupid or have scarier dreams, but it usually turns out that the study used a sample of 30 people from Marin County and was performed by unrepentant leftist terrorists who became college professors.

Of course, even if we were to take those contrary studies seriously, they still are far fewer in number—and show far less striking results—than the many more surveys that come out that show that people on the right are just better off.

There is a big macro-question here:

Is this because conservatism attracts better people, or is this because adherence to a more conservative ideology makes people better?

That is a difficult question, and one I am not sure we can fully answer here. Whatever the answer, the differences are pretty major. The gaps are often large. The facts are striking...

How I see it and I might be wrong but.....the Manson followers murdered that actress because she was rich and a screwy way, they thought they were doing her a favor. That seemed to me the ultimate example of how haywire liberalism could drive folks.

I think, just in general, conservatives have thought about the issues and come to conclusions. Liberals tend to make decisions on emotion. Liberals don’t think as deeply about issues. Whatever the problem, they think government should do more to fight homelessness, fight AIDS, spend more on education, spend more on healthcare, spend more fighting pollution, spend more for infrastructure. And then raise taxes if needed to pay for it all. There is no give and take, no setting of priorities. The mantra is gov’t should do this and that, no matter the cost or affects in other areas.

Just as anectodal evidence, I have known people who are conservative on some issues, and more moderate or even liberal in their view of a few select issues. I haven’t really known any conservatives who are 100% down the line conservatives. But almost all liberals I have ever known or talked to follow the liberal line almost 100%. It really makes me think that they don’t think about the issues, rather, they look to the talking points on issues and let someone else tell them what to think.

What I have noticed is conservatives make decisions using core values and facts. Liberals make decisions based on how something makes them feel. Always succumbing to your desires isn’t going to take you down the right path very often..

I think it makes you better. I was an envious liberal in my 20s. Sarcastic, vengeful, bitter, and mean. When I became a conservative, I become much less bitter and mean.

I'll always be sarcastic and vengeful though. Irish blood, Mars in Scorpio... can't help that.

I believe intelligent, sane people are conservative because they can understand that killing defenseless babies is wrong and executing murderers is just. They also understand that less government is good and that total government control is bad. They also understand that gun control isn't about guns, it's about control and that disarming law abiding citizens does nothing to reduce crime. They also understand that children should be raised in a two parent home where one is a man, the other is a woman and they are married. I could go on and on, but conservatives understand how wrong liberals are on just about every issue.

Conservatives understand independence, self-reliance and accountability for actions. They have a more internal locus of control, instead of blaming outside factors and forces for their problems. I find that conservatives ofter are more compassionate, and put this into action by volunteering to help others, instead of hoping government takes care of social and community issues.

These are the basis of a more healthy psyche.

Liberalism by its very definition attracts malcontents.. they look for acceptance from the GROUP because they have issues accepting themselves, let alone others. Which is why the group, and strict adherance to the groups dictated belief is tantamount. Respect for the individual only exists so long as that individual tows the line.. the minute they don’t they are spurned.

Liberals wrap themselves in their cloak of “tolerance” while being the most intollerant people on the planet. They are mentally (many of them anyway) incapable of accepting the very idea that persons do not have to agree with another persons view or idea to respect/accept them. It is largely beyond their capability to seperate accepting a human being without agreeing with their decisions.

Case in point, I found myself in a crowd of mostly liberals and I dared to say that I can see no way logically you can reach any other conclusion than homosexuality is a mental disorder. Of course for me to think this, let alone flatly state it, you would have thought that I had just stated Hitler was God. They started making the same old tired rediculous “enabling” arguments... all of which I quickly and concisely shot down... with every logical argument lost they became even more angry and bitter. I advocated no anger or violence or mistreatment or discrimination against those with this illness, but you would have believed I’d called on the irradication of them by their continually viceral reactions. Finally one decided to tell me I needed to grow up its 2008.. as though the Chronological year had any relevance to the facts.

Liberals are emotional beasts, they have turned their backs in many ways on the single greatest gift from God, that being reason. They have tertiary relationships with reason, but only use it in relation to emotion... facts and reality are secondary to emotion, and since they do not recognize their emotions as what they are.. emotion, and lack the ability to seperate emotion from fact, they generally are rather miserable people.

There is nothing wrong with emotion, however when you let it dictate your life and world view you are going to be left disappointed, depressed and angry.
