We're not going to pay AP's extortion fees and we're not going to allow them to control free speech!
Recent AP vs fair use threads ^ | June 17, 2008 | Jim Robinson

This is our Boston tea Party.

The Associated Press wants to levy a $12.50 and up license fee (aka extortion fee) on any blogger who quotes more than 4 words from one of their propaganda pieces. This is an outrageous attempt to control the blogosphere and free speech itself. To hell with their license fee and to hell with the AP. Any AP article that gets posted to FR will be jettisoned into the harbor posthaste.

Please do not post any AP material to FR excerpted or not.

FYI - Anytime one starts to belittle someone and stops arguing their points, they have lost.

Anyone ever think this is a way for them to control any negative news that will be coming out about Obama? The average site is not going to pay the fine and is going to be scared away from the fee so what doesn’t circulate?

Any negative news on their poster boy...Obama.

Just a thought as we head into campaign season.

Thing is, no one 'has' to pay for work they refuse to hire. - Exactly - and yet many here are upset that they have to pay. If they do not want the product, don't pay for it.

You sound a little snarky there. If you were, then this appiles to you....unless YOU come up with the dough for FR to fight it, I wouldn’t be so snarky. If you weren’t being snarky, then I apologize for my snarky.

No snark. I’m just saying that there are blogs out there willing to challenge the legality of the AP’s terms of service. They will win, and as a result, all blogs (well-funded or not)will win also.
This is good news, just so you know.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the clarification. Glad there are some out there with the money to do that! Wish I had it to give to FR.

to keep from being scrutinized.

That's it and it's election time - their favorite time!

You mean to say that there are actually four consecutive words in any AP article worth quoting? Who'da thunk it???

JAT but maybe that is what they want. If others follow then only what the media want heard and discussed, will be available for the public. I’m glad you refused but can you challenge this in court?

Somebody should tell the AP that hyperlinks are what the Internet is about.

If they don't like it, they should definitely only allow their crap to be used by print media.

Good point! The only impact it has on the Haditha effort is that the AP is often first with headlines out of Pendleton. We’ll just have to beat them to the story!

When you go out to buy a car, why do you pay for it? The guys on the assembly line that made the car “have already been paid”

"Somebody should tell the AP that hyperlinks are what the Internet is about."

They hate the internet. Way too many people can challenge their "view" and their "facts" in an instant. Sounds like desperation to me, but still irks the poo out of me.
