John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state.
The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."
He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."
Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks.
"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said. "It's positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive."

I don’t know what the statute of limitations should be for Grade A offensive remarks. I just know that it would be damn foolish to associate with such a person.
Would we be so forgiving if an Obama fundraiser had made this same comment? Hell no. And that would be the right answer. Right is right and wrong is wrong.
Oh love that standard CNN. A standard that of course doesn't apply to the left in general and to Obama in particular.
CNN and the rest of the LMSM totally accept that Obama was unaware of the attitude/remarks of his personal pastor for 20 years and yet McCain is supposed to know all from 18 years ago. Again a blatant, in-your-face example of the LMSM's hypocrisy.
I am constantly amazed at the ignorance that exists over the Obamao Double Standard, the Obamao can fundraise with Charlie Manson...that’s fine...
Mad John has no such luxury, he is under the microscope, Obamao is under the Telescope (as in celestial v terrestrial), make no mistake about it.
It would appear that the MSM has McCain afraid to blow his nose. He’s doomed.
The guy is radioactive. McCain’s staff shouldn’t have scheduled an event with him in the first place.
I had no problem with him when he said that. I actually liked his answer when confronted about this talking about what happened to him at the Hanoi Hilton. Some guy made a stupid statement 20 years ago and he apologized and now McCain throws him under the bus. Very petty in my opinion.
Personally, I’m not the kind of person who looks back 18 years to see what people have said.
However, this is a political campaign people - the Dems took out a fine conservative last year because he called an obnoxious political operative a monkey. I guarantee if McCain hadn’t cancelled, the Dems would have brought it out and made McCain look like a virulent sexist.
Politics is war, and you have to be ruthless, especially when the press is devoted to making sure your opponent wins.
Have I ever said something offensive? Sure. But not like this. This is pathologically bad. I think McCain made absolutely the right move here.
I remember that gubernatorial race between Clayton "Claytie" Williams and Ann "Mother" Richards well. For a time, Claytie was well out in front. He was tough on crime, and had made a great commercial in which he said he wanted to "introduce criminals to the joys of bustin' up rocks". I agree that Claytie's "joke" was not funny. He was a walking gaffe machine. At a later moment in the campaign, after some statement or other by Mother Richards, he quipped "has she started drinkin' agin?" (a reference to Richards being a recovering alcoholic).
I still voted for the dude. He might have been a loose-tongued doofus, but Richards was positively evil, saying that she regarded "the right to choose" as a sacred right. She pretty much had blood on her hands as far as I am concerned. Her actions (for me) spoke much louder than Claytie's words.
That said, McCain was probably right to call off the fund raiser. The MSM would have made a much bigger deal out of Claytie's remarks (yes, I know, many years a go and he apologized, etc) than anything said by Rev. Wright.
I’m glad some common sense is tuning in and replying to this thread!
Yea, the woman cracks me up. But it is old news.
Yes, the candidate who used the term “gook” in a newspaper interview certainly stands on the higher ground here...yessiree!
This from the party that still considered the wife of serial rapist Bill Clinton a viable candidate THIS YEAR.
They don’t give a Rat’s ass over the issue. It is a lot of Macaca. Phony outrage.
In McCain’s article about his captivity in Vietnam, he used the word “gook” quite a few times. Guess he’s not electable now. But really this is all just a distraction that’s not helping my kids!
I agree
Oh for crying out loud! Why don't you read up a little on BhusseinO's fundraisers?

Ayers is one of the brains behind Obama’s political machine in Chicago.

These Stalinists suck. Big time.
What would YOU call abusive captors? "Honeycakes" or "North-Vietnamese Mean People Who Are Torturing Me" or what would you suggest considering your communications are limited? That is, assuming you have been a POW. I have not, but it sounds like you have since you know better. Right?
