Thanks for the info. Obviously some units are better designed than others. For efficency, the exhaust air point should be some distance from the intake air.

Illinois Democrats, looking out for the little guy, and frying their asses with regulations and fines.

Way to go, home of Obamie.

Installation consisted of opening the window and placing the plastic parts into the opening.

Oh, yeah, and the duct tape ~ 2 minutes maybe?

The people that are most likely to die in a heat wave are least likely to be able to afford $400 for a portable room air conditioner.

We have an old house with hot water heat and didn't want to tear up the house installing ductwork for central air conditioning. We went with ductless, mini-split air conditioners. The cost was comparable to central ac, and since we have four of them, we can "zone" the house, depending on what rooms we are using. The compressors are much quieter than some central ac units, and you only know they are running by the waving of nearby vegetation.

Do you have any info on the energy efficiency of these units compared to central air?

As you might deduce, I’m not a fan.

So, then, are you an air-conditioner?

I was only able to find this-Although the efficiency ratings of ductless systems (SEER from 10 to 12) are not as high as the top-of-the-line central air conditioner (SEER up to 16), they can still be more efficient than window, wall and even central units. Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in a unconditioned space such as an attic. from this article (scroll through the page to get to the article.)

As I mentioned before, I like being able to "zone" the house by keeping the temperatures up in the parts of the house we are not using, and down in the parts we are, rather than have the whole house at the same temperature.

The efficiency lost through the ducts is no joke. Most systems leak quite a bit. This not only wastes the cooled, dehumidified air that escapes, it pulls in warm, humid air that adds to the load on the system.

You know, I thought of that after posting. LOL

Most air conditioners contain fans, BTW.

You’re correct Erasmus, the condenser is outside and the evaporator is inside, outside air stays outside and inside air stays inside. The only thing that circulates is liquid refrigerant to the evaporator (inside) and gaseous refrigerant to the condenser (outside).

I smell dead people: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2003-09-25-france-heat_x.htm . Oh, wait a minute...liberals want more dead people so that global warming will subside since these souls won’t be around to consume energy cooling their homes. To a democrat/liberal, death is a good thing unless it’s a one-eyed spotted sewer snake.

But they can afford a $400 window unit?

I'm a baby boomer and got my first window air conditioner in 1992. Lots of us who grew up in the 50's, 60's, and 70's did so without air conditioning and survived. I grew up in NYC. There'd be that one week in late July/early August when the temp would hit 100º and we wished we had one.

My son-in-law's parents grew up in southwest Florida without air conditioning. His mother says leather: shoes, belts, etc., would get moldy in the summer because of the heat and humidity.

I'm in Florida now and know people in this day and age who do not have air conditioning.

I was sure you did realize it but I couldn’t resist.

Yes, I know about fans in A/C. The a/c business has been the bread and butter around here.

I guess you have never been poor, shut in a house during the summer, and had some bureaucrat tell you, your air conditioner is illegal. Do you know how much $400 is to a person living on social security?
