USF terror suspect agrees to plead guilty

Former University of South Florida engineering student Ahmed Mohamed agreed Friday to plead guilty to a federal charge of providing material support to terrorists.

For their part, prosecutors plan to drop six other charges against Mohamed, 26, when he is sentenced. Among the counts to be dropped are charges of illegally transporting explosive material, possessing an unregistered destructive device, and a student visa violation for possessing a firearm.

"This plea agreement was at the request of our client after a very long and agonizing decision by both him and his family, and it was his decision to resolve this matter though this plea. We have to respect that," said attorney Linda Moreno, who along with Lyann Goudie, was preparing to defend Mohamed against the charges at a trial starting July 7.

Since when did the US government start allowing criminals to decide what charges he will plead to and what do we care what he and his family decides?
This guy is a terrorist carrying out his missions and should not even be sucking air.

The History Channel recently had a program about Tamer the Lame (better known as Tamerlane) and how he treated those that opposed him. In one instance, he captured a city whose mayor had particularly offended him. He had molten silver poured into his nose, ears, mouth and finally his eyes.

THAT is how you treat people who want to kill you.

This is one area where I for one, and many others in the UK simply do not understand the US Justice system. If someone has committed a crime they should be charged and prosecuted. Not that we have it uptight by any means.

A plea agreement is the equivalent of a conviction. Both parties agree to the recommended sentence (it’s still up to the judge, within constraints of the applicable statutes).

When it spares both sides the cost of a trial and reduces the risk to both sides, I fail to see the problem. Don’t people settle non-criminal disputes out of court in the United Kingdom? This is just the extension of that reasonable approach to criminal justice. Most criminal cases in the U.S. never get to trial.

Commie judges, lazy lawyers?
Trumped up charges with little evidence to prosecute?

We don’t understand it either.

Well I can see it saves money, and I can see that it is an admission of guilt. But negotiating what charges a person will or will not be charged with just seems strange - certainly in this thread there is a tacit understanding of that when it comes to terrorists. But the logic remains the same whatever the crime.

But heck, criminal law is hardly my major :^)

This guy is a real piece of work. Here is an overview of his “student” activities. They were caught near a high security shipyard with a bunch of explosives in their trunk. This guy told the cops that it was only fireworks.
The lawyer sounds like this terrorist wannabe is an innocent who is only pleading guilty to spare his family.
I wish they would all get the hell out of my country.

Looks like daily UK news on Islamic maniacs who want us dead - going through the justice system is on it's way to you. This stuff is happening all the time over here...and lawyers are just getting fat with the trials and appeals.....

...only we don't mention Islam or Muslim in case we are charged with a hate crime.

Whatta farce.

I don’t care how much money plea bargaining saves. This is not a stupid shoplifting case. This creep is an enemy combatant who has no hesitation about killing Americans.

Any terrorist convicted in US court should be dumped in with the prison’s general population and their prison clothes should have “terrorist” on them.
