McCain: Guantanamo Ruling One of the ‘Worst Decisions’ in History
Fox News ^ | June 13, 2008 | Foxnews.com

Posted on 06/13/2008 12:09:36 PM PDT by DCRoush

John McCain said Friday that the Supreme Court ruling on Guantanamo Bay detainees is “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.” The presumptive GOP nominee said the decision, a 5-4 ruling Thursday that determined Guantanamo detainees have the right to seek release in civilian courts, would lead to a wave of frivolous challenges. “We are now going to have the courts flooded with so-called … habeas corpus suits against the government, whether it be about the diet, whether it be about the reading material. And we are going to be bollixed up in a way that is terribly unfortunate because we need to go ahead and adjudicate these cases,” he said at a town hall meeting in New Jersey. McCain said he has worked hard to ensure the U.S. military does not torture prisoners but that the detainees at Guantanamo are still “enemy combatants.” “These are people who are not citizens. They do not and never have been given the rights that citizens in this country have,” he said. “Now, my friends, there are some bad people down there. There are some bad people.” Barack Obama released a statement Thursday saying the Supreme Court decision “ensures that we can protect our nation and bring terrorists to justice while also protecting our core values.” “The Court’s decision is a rejection of the Bush administration’s attempt to create a legal black hole at Guantanamo - yet another failed policy supported by John McCain,” he said. “This is an important step toward re-establishing our credibility as a nation committed to the rule of law and rejecting a false choice between fighting terrorism and respecting habeas corpus.”

McLame’s handlers must have told him people were livid and he’d better say something.

Agreed. His comments don't square with his previous push to close Guantanamo and to abandon "torture" of prisoners. How sad that both major political parties could only find a couple of duplicitous farts to run.

McCain may want GITMO closed, but I have not heard when?

If anyone thinks McCain won't say something completely different tomorrow or next week they haven't been paying attention to McCain.

John McCain vs. John McCain

McCain's YouTube Problem Just Became a Nightmare

It's like John F'n Kerry all over again.

>>>>McCain has always wanted the Gitmo prisoners cases processed ASAP and then Gitmo closed ASAP.

Problem is that they have all (100 percent) been unlawful combatants who could quite justifiably have been shot on sight.

Oh puh-leeze.

Read post #47 for instance.

He’s just as politically expedient as Obama while being less believable.

If we’re supposed to vote for socialism, why not the real thing?

I swear, FR is crawling with McLame-supporting DU trolls.

McCain has soiled himself on so many issues, that it is impossible to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Look, you and I have nothing to gain by pointing out what a jacka— this man is. We both want Conservatism advanced. If he were a Conservative, we’d be backing him all the way.

I sometimes wonder what folks think, when they note that I have backed Conservatism without fail for the last ten years, but now see I can’t back McCain. All of a sudden a guy with McCain’s history trumps a guy with mine.

Has John towed the line 99% of the time? Have I?

I’m staying true to my values, and so is John McCain. I just can’t stay true to his.

I suspect that pretty soon a sniper will have to read his target his rights before he picks him off. They'll give the sniper a rifle and a bull horn where he will have to broadcast the following before he shoots him:

You are in my gunsights. You have a right to due process. I cannot shoot you if you claim to be represented by an attorney. If you do not have an attorney, one will be appointed to you.

Do you understand your rights and are you willing to waive those rights so that I can shoot you before you blow up that bus full of children?"

I’ve seen those. Some of them were made by leftists (I think), but it’s quite clear. The guy is all over the map. He on one side at 10am, and on another by 6pm.

I like his first comments about the War in Iraq. “Victory in Iraq will come easy.” Later... “I don’t know who it was selling the idea that Iraq would be an easy victory, but some of us have been saying all along it would be a tough battle and take a long time.”

Question: If he thought it would be easy, then he approved of the intial plan, before he disagreed with it right?

McCain has honed the fine art of milking issues for all they are worth. And some folks are just sad enough to buy into it.

Just like his Shiite/Sunni "problem", he shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what Habeas lawsuits involve. They don't have a thing to do with diet or reading material or any other such nonsense.

Oh yes they do! They shouldn't, but they do.

Thousands of habeas suits are filed by inmates every day, in every state of the union, claiming that their diet, their reading material, their mail status, their prison garb, their required haircut, their visitor status, etc. etc. etc. causes their imprisonment to be "unconstitutional."

McCain was exactly right here. Someone else needs to do some homework.

Its kind of what makes me enraged about people all over FR kissing his butt.

I thought conservatives were supposed to be smarter than liberals.

My eyes have been sorely opened. We are in worse trouble, because there are true believers in this election. Obamessiah and McCain the Savior.

” Once people have new entitlements and have entered the programs and are benefitting materially from them, they will never want to go back.”

Sorry to break this to you but were already at the point of no return. Seniors got the social security, medicaid, drug benefits, Welfare, illegals get free health care, food aid, and education, liberals have all of the social welfare programs to support homosexuals, leftist education, etc..........................................

We are already on the road of no return, electing McCain does nothing but takes us further down the road. Time to get rid of him and all other RINOs - if that means that we wander in the desert for awhile so be it. From the ashes will rise a Phoenix..........

Why don’t we just not capture them, if you get my meaning.

And the reason the cases have stalled and are going nowhere is that the terrorists’ defense attorneys have been asking for delays while they pursue their claims on up to the Supreme Court, as in this case, with the hope of changing the ground rules.

"Then just where would Mcpain put those prisoners if he had his way a Gitmo was shut down?"

*sigh*

McCain wanted them prosecuted long ago and Gitmo shutdown long ago shortly thereafter. Is this sequence and timeframe truly that hard to understand?
