It’s supposed to crest a foot higher than than the big flood of ‘93. The biggest problem then was that it took out the water plant. Let’s hope they’ve got it better-protected now.

I would recommend evacuating Des Moines on a good day...but this is ridiculous.

The former boss of the Des Moines Waterworks, L. D. McMullin, ordered an 11 foot wall built around the plant after the '93 flood and caught all kinds of criticism for going overboard. The paper nicknamed it "Fort McMullin."
Nobody's complaining now...

How long did all those people who lost their homes in ‘93 live in FEMA trailers? Was Bill Clinton held accountable for that act of God?
Or was something else at work here - something that must remain unspoken for it is so very true.

Anyone blame Bush/Cheney yet?”
I think they’re synonymous.

Anyone confiscating guns yet?

Thanks for the map. I have an aunt who lives near the intersection of Park Ave and S.W. 9th St. Hopefully she is just far enough away from the 500 year flood zone to escape any problems.

I expect Iowans to deal with floods better than New Orleans.
To: Myrddin
I think that’s near the Wakonda Club area. She should be high and dry...
To: hawkeye101
Anybody want to take a bet that these evacuees won’t still be living in FEMA housing 3 years from now????
To: ridesthemiles
Can’t take that bet. Those Iowans are pretty hard workin’ folk. Bring in some of the surrounding farmers for a good ol’ fashioned Barn Raisin’. ;-)

What are these levels going to do when they hit the Mississippi?
