DES MOINES — Officials on Friday issued a voluntary evacuation order for much of downtown Des Moines and other areas bordering the river.

Officials recommended that downtown residents and businesses evacuate parts of downtown on either side of the Des Moines River by 6 p.m. Friday. Included are all areas in Des Moines' 500 year floodplain.

The alert was prompted by rising river levels expected to peak at 8 p.m. Friday.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie said they are asking for the evacuations "to err on the side of citizens and residents."

The evacuation should begin immediately, Cownie said, and be completed by 6 p.m.

Even as officials called for people to leave downtown, Cownie said residents should remain calm.

"Anyone blame Global Warming yet?"

Where the heck have you been? They are salivating with glee over the rains as mother nature punishes us poor heathen nonbelievers...

It’s supposed to crest a foot higher than than the big flood of ‘93. The biggest problem then was that it took out the water plant. Let’s hope they’ve got it better-protected now.

I would recommend evacuating Des Moines on a good day...but this is ridiculous.

The former boss of the Des Moines Waterworks, L. D. McMullin, ordered an 11 foot wall built around the plant after the '93 flood and caught all kinds of criticism for going overboard. The paper nicknamed it "Fort McMullin."
Nobody's complaining now...

“Anyone blame Global Warming yet?”

Anyone blame Bush/Cheney yet?

How long did all those people who lost their homes in ‘93 live in FEMA trailers? Was Bill Clinton held accountable for that act of God?

Or was something else at work here - something that must remain unspoken for it is so very true.

““Anyone blame Global Warming yet?”

Anyone blame Bush/Cheney yet?”

I think they’re synonymous.

Thanks for the map. I have an aunt who lives near the intersection of Park Ave and S.W. 9th St. Hopefully she is just far enough away from the 500 year flood zone to escape any problems.

I expect Iowans to deal with floods better than New Orleans.

I think that’s near the Wakonda Club area. She should be high and dry...

Anybody want to take a bet that these evacuees won’t still be living in FEMA housing 3 years from now????

Can’t take that bet. Those Iowans are pretty hard workin’ folk. Bring in some of the surrounding farmers for a good ol’ fashioned Barn Raisin’. ;-)

What are these levels going to do when they hit the Mississippi?
