Hard to believe losing an election is a good thing, but, then again, many Freepers do.

Many McCain bashers believe McCain's defeat would result in a second coming of a Reagan clone.

Limbaugh, for instance, believes it would be a mistake for McCain to win because the RINOs would take over the party.

Rothenberg, then, has company, but the question is how much company. Senator McCain did win the nomination.

Given what a bad field both parties put forth I’ve been thinking for over a year now that the 08 winner will probably (put it at about 75%) be a 1 termer. And historically the president that beats a 1 termer gets 2. Plus lets not forget the congressional mid-term problems (party of the president usually loses seats in the mid-term), and with the projections of the GOP losing seats this year, if McCain’s ‘12 successor brings seats (which usually happens) that would be 4 congressional elections in a row where the GOP lost seats.

Of course my 1 term projection revolves entirely around the idea that this year’s terrible field was an aberration. If the field in ‘12 is just as bad or worse then all bets are off.

Real anger at McCain is easily seen from this thread. Looking at it, my guess is most is a function of the illegal problem.

Scratch a McCain Basher and watch a xenophobe bleed. This issue will be resolved shortly after the beginning of the next Congress. Most big time elected officials hate this issue and any other issue that results in public pressure determined by blind emotion.

So anticipate, hopefully, a clear way to identify illegals when they apply for a job. Also, there will be a plan to provide a way for those presently here to become citizens. Finally, all of this will be done with surprising ease once the fear of immediate voter outrage is lessened.

It seems to me that people are ignoring what will happen to other republicans running for office when they crank up the BS about Mccain. When you don’t support your party you get more of the other party.

You don’t want to vote for him fine, but please think of what happens when you let democrats control the whole enchilada and at least tone down the infighting.

LBJ and Jimmy Carter were basically 1-term presidents. We still suffer from them.

I'm voting McCain.

a McCain victory might produce its own series of domino-like events that ultimately might hurt the Grand Old Party.

Yea, like this Party is in SUCH good health right now!

And if anyone would dispute it, just look at who our nominee is.

PS: see tagline

A McCain loss would spell disaster for this country. Obama and company would start us on a march to socialism and the IEDs would not be killing US soldiers in Baghdad, but soon be killing US civilians on American streets. As much as I dislike McCain, I could not vote for Obama.

Consider that due to his age McCain will be an unlikely candidate in 2012 and the economic disaster likely to be handed to us by a Democrat Congress with a cooperative McCain could set the stage for a conservative renaissance. Four years of an Obama presidency might cause a conservative backlash, but the level of economic disaster and loss of US security inflicted during those four years could take generations to fix.

The Rino’s have long since taken over the party, why do you think McCain is the nominee?

We can NOT underestimate the damage that would occur during an Obama administration.

The BEST course of action is to elect McCain, support individual CONSERVATIVE politicians, and spend great effort to oust RINOs and send strong messages to McCain on the need for changing his positions on key issues.

Republicans and conservatives are rallying behind Sen. John McCain's White House bid

Huh? Since when? Might vote for him as the lesser of evil, but he's still bona fide, unquestionably EVIL.

I won't be supporting him...and in my state he got his rear handed to him handily. Our delegates don't support him. Not really. They might give lip service to it for party unity's sake...but hey, he's Mr. Maverick.

He never cared one crap about unity before.

Now he will reap the Whirlwind he has sown.

The hope that somehow an Obama victory and 2 years of democrats being in complete control would somehow swing enough state houses our way to effect redistricting ignores the fact that a loss of that proportion will leave the GOP so demoralized that they would be unlikely to recover at a state level to do anything.

You guys need to think outside the box. We are currently at war even though a majority of people wouldn’t know it. What would happen if a man with questionable loyalties (Obama) gets elected? On which side would we fight then? Finally, who says we’ll have another ‘fair’ election?

It’s a lose-lose situation for conservatives and the country regardless of which of these jokers is elected. Who cares about the Republican party as long as it is a liberal left-wing party? The country will suffer serious damage no matter which one of these fools takes office in January.

Rothenberg is not a conservative.
Taking his advice is nuts.
If the Dems puts up a moderate, I’d throw in the towel. But Obama is the MOST LEFTIST AND LEAST QUALIFIED NOMINEE EVER.

Some conservatives are withholding support for McCain. Here is my response to those that are on the fence:
1. McCain is a moderate-to-conservative, Obama was rated *most liberal* Senator in the Senate last year. McCain is better on taxes, Judges, Iraq, Iran, GWOT, right-to-life, gun rights, earmarks/spending, and gay marriage (Obama will use his bully pulpit to encourage it)
2. McCain is a capable and experienced man who served the country his whole life, even spending 5 years in a POW camp. Obama has spent a lifetime raised and associated with radicals, marxists, and leftwing activists; he has served ‘the cause’ of leftwing politics only and nothing else. He has no accomplishments worthy of note except getting elected.
3. Ideology aside, and putting just the basic protection of the country on the line, there is no comparison - McCain is better.
4. We vote based on who is best for the country as top priority. Republican conservatives can clean up the mess of RINO poop in the RNC later as a secondary priority, but the top priority of a patriot is what is best for America. Country before party!
5. Based on #1, #2 and #3, McCain is far far better for this country than Obama. Neither man is ‘evil’, but far more bad things will happen to USA if Obama is elected.
6. You never win by losing. The most leftwing President in American history - Obama - will be a huge blow to the conservative cause. Anyone who thinks otherwise is on drugs.

ROFLMAO ... Look how weak and vapid Obama is ... running away from town halls with McCain:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0608/McCain_camp_not_happy_with_Obama_resistance_to_town_halls.html

Barack Obama’s counter-offer to do two joint forums on top of the three sanctioned debates is far short of what the McCain camp wants. Team McCain recognizes that their preferred 10 won’t come to fruition but think Obama’s counter is something of an insult.

And they have a counter to the counter:

“Barack Obama requires more preconditions to meet with voters and John McCain than he does Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Fortunately the world doesn’t revolve around what Limbaugh, or any other talk radio talking point pinhead, believes.

McCain’s a one termer, and I think even he knows this... and honestly its probably a damned good thing. McCain is also someone who, like him or hate him, doesn’t fit into any mold classification. The left will try to paint him as a radical rightie.. the radical righties will try to paint him as a RINO... and the truth is he doesn’t fit either mold.

I think knowing that he’s a one termer (his age, and his political background) almost assures that he will make the decisions he feels is right for the nation, not his re-election. Not saying I will agree with every decision he will make, but I think this is going to mean he’ll be far more free in his decision making that a first termer of any party. He’s shown he’s not afraid to go against his party if he things its the right thing (which has ticked off a lot of folks there) and he’s shown he’s not afraid to stand up to the other side either when he feels its the right thing. I think with all the crap that’s gone on lately a one termer who can’t be pigeonheld to any mold is probably what the nation needs more than anything.

If you are worried about the long term location of the party, the VP pick will tell you more about that than anything.

There is no Reagan waiting in the wings folks... look around... he’s not there.. and giving the white house to a marxist like fauxbama won’t bring him about. Reagan was a once a century thing... the right person, at the right moment, with the right stuff. If you take him out of time and move him somewhere other than where he was.. you don’t get the same result.
