George W Bush and Pope Benedict XVI have held an intimate meeting in Rome as rumours mounted in Italy that the president may follow in Tony Blair's footsteps and convert to Catholicism.
The two men spoke for half an hour in the 12th century Tower of St John, a private area in the Vatican gardens which is used by the pope for private reflection.
The usual protocol for heads-of-state is a meeting in the pope's library in the Apostolic Palace, but a spokesman for the Vatican said Benedict wanted to reward Mr Bush for the "warmth" of his reception at the White House earlier this year.

I think it stems from the blue collar backgrounds of many of those Catholic families. When the Democrats seemed to take the side of the average worker, against the Republicans, who were more on the side of business owners, those union folks tended toward the Democrat party. Remember, this was well before the days of the Democrats being the party of abortion on demand, paid for by the government, and special rights for homosexuals.
Only in the last 35 years have we seen more Catholics moving toward Republican candidates, because they saw no alternative. They could not, in good conscience, vote for a Democrat who was going to push such an immoral agenda, even if they WERE more acceptable on the so called "Social Justice" issues.
His brother converted, at least initially, because he married into the Church.
Pro-abortion politicians who receive Holy Communion are bringing God’s judgement down on themselves. They don’t diminish the actual teachings of the Church.
I love that picture of the President and the Pope, sitting across the table from one another. You can tell, by the President’s posture, that he is supremely comfortable in the Pope’s presence, and by the looks of the Pope, the feeling is mutual.
Don't confuse the pronouncements of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, in America, for the actual teachings of the Catholic Church. American Bishops let their personal politics cloud their judgement, sometimes.
Amazing that one can be so uninformed in today's world of instant information.
The only way a Catholic can receive an annulment is if it is proven, after much investigation by a Tribunal, that a sacramental marriage never existed, because one or both of the parties was not able to commit to one. In Teddy's case, it was likely because he didn't believe that being married meant that he had to actually be faithful to his wife. Why would he think so? His father had never been faithful, and he raised his sons with the same 'Continental' attitude.
Amen to that. The Wesleys are spinning in their graves.
If the rumors are right, the country where he plans to retire is mainly Catholic.
Some stop in Dallas.
VERY interesting, and thanx for the pix.
Another story was regarding the Pope's meeting with President Bush.
Reuter's reported that following the private meeting of President Bush and Pope Benedict, the two men prayed together. Here's the excerpt.
Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said that the "brief prayer" took place after the pope and Bush had finished their private talks in the Oval Office and Laura Bush joined them.
"There was a brief prayer for the family (as an institution)," Lombardi said.
Beautiful picture.Thanks STARWISE.
You are making my day :)
Dallas??
I’m glad. Those first two pictures above really touch my heart.

BTW, it’s amazing that a doctor was just on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell, explaining that the autopsy of Tim Russert is showing that he died of a coronary thrombosis (clot). Very unusual interview .. Dr. Newman is a friend of Tim’s. Said he did have coronary heart disease and that his weight was an issue. He just passed a treadmill test on April 29th. Surpised at this very sensitive information being so openly discussed.
I thought that was a little shocking, frankly.
Not sure I needed or had some right to know his personal health conditions.
I wonder if his family gave permission for this personal info. I’m frankly stunned at the detail Dr. Newman covered. Did hear about the defibrillator attempts?
Aside from the clot issue .. which was obviously fatal, it’s a reminder that I should pass along some critical info. I’m urging you and all .. take magnesium .. EVERY day. It’s vital. It keeps muscles toned, among over 300+ other vital body functions, and the heart is a muscle. I’ve been taking it for 10 yrs.
Read through the condition links when you can and you’ll see the important impact of this simple mineral.
I’ve read that in 99% of fatal heart attacks (I’m just not sure of how the clot issue overlays with heart muscle strength), the person was totally lacking in magnesium. Ever since then, I never fail to take my daily dose.
:)
Anywhere he chooses to have his library is fine, but I may need to pack more pbj to work if I need to save up to go to the Vatican to see his library.
A location in Texas would be very welcome.
(Maine would be even better, but I’d better quit while I am not so far behind).
LOL
