George W Bush meets Pope amid claims he might convert to Catholicism

George W Bush and Pope Benedict XVI have held an intimate meeting in Rome as rumours mounted in Italy that the president may follow in Tony Blair's footsteps and convert to Catholicism.

The two men spoke for half an hour in the 12th century Tower of St John, a private area in the Vatican gardens which is used by the pope for private reflection.

The usual protocol for heads-of-state is a meeting in the pope's library in the Apostolic Palace, but a spokesman for the Vatican said Benedict wanted to reward Mr Bush for the "warmth" of his reception at the White House earlier this year.

At least the Telegraph isn’t saying that President Bush wants to be Pope.

Are they blaming him for the crusades yet?

George W Bush and Pope Benedict XVI have held an intimate meeting in Rome...

Did they compare scars or something?

Hard to believe journalists wasted their time and money paying for an education.

I was a Methodist for 35 years but got out of it. I still love my little Methodist Church where I used to live but can never go back again.

That is certainly true at the organizational level.

Yes, I don’t doubt that. I was just wondering about the congregations.

To see W do that, would be about as likely as him leaving Laura for Richard Simmons

LOL!

Sad to see The Daily Telegraph stooping to the level of tabloid journalism in this article.

BTW...if W was already a Roman Catholic, he could leave Laura and the church could call it "an annulment" (as per Teddy Kennedy)

Bush converting to Roman Catholicism is about as likely as the Pope becoming a Methodist.

Thank you for the ping, STARWISE, and all that you did to make such a beautiful post of this visit by our President to Pope Benedict XVI. He and Laura surely received a very special Blessing.

Bush has been a great President.
I’d welcome him into my church if he so decides that his faith compels it.

A mere two weeks ago, the moonbats were abuzz about the president exchanging a "secret" handshake with the President of the Mormon Church>.

Next week, he might meet with Billy Graham and the rumors will fly about him joining the Baptist Church.

Regardless of the president's religious preferences, I'm grateful that he appointed two solid constitutio-respecting supreme court justices who happen to be members of the RCC.

She doesn't belong on the list. She was never Catholic. Her father was. Her mother was a prot and raised all the Children as such, but her father was to the end.

She wrote a great column about it.

Sounds like he'd make a very good Papist to me, but what do I know?

Agreed. I was mostly unconvinced by the article's comparison of Bush to Tony Blair. On the one hand, Blair's wife is Catholic and there were numerous, credible rumors that he planned to convert after he left office. It was an open secret.

Waiting until after he left office would be typical in England, because there are ancient laws and strong feelings against Catholics holding important positions in government. I have never seen such rumors about Bush, however, and as an American he has less reason to delay. It may be that he is more private, but it also suggests that the article is simply speculative.

On the other hand, I would agree with you. To all appearances, Bush has the makings of a far more traditional Catholic than Blair, if that doesn't sound too judgmental. I know plenty of Cafeteria Catholics, but they were born into the Church and badly catechized. Usually converts are much more orthodox than Blair seems to be, on basic issues like gay rights and abortion, because they have CHOSEN to be Catholics.

From that point of view, Bush would be a far likelier convert than Blair.

Unlikely, but I’ve always thought that President Bush acted more ‘Catholic’ than many Catholics I know.
