Its less than a week into the general election campaign, but already Michelle Obama is a Republican target.
Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger leveled the first blow, introducing Republican John McCains wife at a fundraiser this week as someone who is proud of her country, not just once but always. Obama wasnt mentioned by name, but the audience got it.
The dig signaled the start of what Democrats expect will be a concerted effort to cast Michelle Obama and, by extension, Barack Obama as an unpatriotic radical. It also pointed out the urgency to define Michelle Obama to general election voters before the opposition goes too far in doing it for her, strategists said.
We live now in an era where everything and everyone is fair game, said Douglas E. Schoen, who was a pollster and adviser to former President Bill Clinton from 1994 to 2000. It is certainly the case that Teresa Heinz Kerry was probably not an asset in John Kerrys campaign, at least publicly, and the jury is still out on how the public will view Michelle Obama.
Despite being a steady presence at her husbands side on primary election nights, and sitting for occasional media interviews, Michelle Obama remains an unfamiliar figure to most voters, strategists said. When she campaigned in recent months, it was almost always alone and in small settings. The most sustained attention she received on cable news shows was for her controversial February statement leaving the impression that she wasnt proud of her country until this year.

And Teresa Heinz Kerry was not an asset to John Kerry, that’s true.
Hillary Clinton was not an asset in ‘92 to Bill Clinton either.
When candidates wives put themselves out there and say controversial things, what do they expect?
Michelle Obama's anti-American sentiment is a legitimate target
No bias in the author’s piece, just straight honest reporting. (/sarc) That evil Eagleburger puts out the shoe, now who is complaining?
As usual the MSM uses certain rhetoric to describe Republicans—”target,” “aimed their fire,” etc.—that they would never use with Democrats.
This has Hillary Clintons’ fingerprints all over it.
The Clintons are still doing things behind the scenes aren’t they?
Trophy wives gone bad, the next series of reality TV.
The bias is palpable to anyone paying attention.
I only wish semantics were more widely taught. Everything today is spin...
(On my car, and damned proud of it...)
A mistake on the GOP’s part, the same thing was tried in 1992 and Hillary was unpopular afterwards, but Bill won the election.
Obamao should be the one who is exposed, not so much M. Obamao.
Funny that this article says nothing about Michelle’s hospital PR job with six figure income, which she got right after Obama became a Senator, and which income tripled to 300K, followed by Obama securing 1 Million dollar earmark for said hospital. If you are going to ‘hit’ Michelle with anything that involves Obama, this should be it.
Who recently said “Words mean things.” Hmmm...
