CHICAGO – Two off-duty Chicago police officers disarmed and arrested a man allegedly carrying a loaded handgun as he waited in line to receive communion Sunday morning in a South Side church.

Aurora resident David Kucia, 57, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after parishioners spotted him with a black handgun in his waistband at the 11 a.m. mass at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 653 W. 37th St.

Churchgoers alerted off-duty Deputy Chief James Keating. Keating and Sgt. Joseph Kipka escorted Kucia outside the church after learning he was not a law-enforcement officer.

Kucia allegedly told the officers he also had a 12-gauge shotgun inside his vehicle, police said. He is expected to appear in court on June 16.

Do they have a law against carrying a weapon, or carrying a concealed weapon?

Why was he arrested?

Because, I would imagine, it's Chicago.

Cause he is in Chicago where apparently they misprinted the constitution and forgot one of the amendments.

I was in a church the other day for a homeschool graduation ceremony. One of the dad’s gave his daughter a hug after giving her the diploma. His suitcoat rode up and I saw the bottom 2” of a holster. No biggie, I felt safe.

Yes, to all of the above I believe. Chicago has a complete hand gun ban in place. Although, I don’t know the specifics of the law, just that it’s one of the most restrictive.

Apparently there was a massacre planed for that morning, and his presence thwarted it's progress, thus he is guilty of impeding the progress of necessary social adjustment?

You see - off-duty officers get to enjoy the 2nd Amendment. All other are serfs...

Chicago has a complete hand gun ban in place.

Of course, that doesn't mean that people aside from law enforcement/military don't have weapons. Same with DC.

FROM:

http://www.officer.com/online/article.jsp?siteSection=1&id=41746

Keating was kneeling in his pew, having just taken communion himself at the 11 a.m. mass, when two eagle-eyed ushers knelt beside him and quietly told him someone in the back of church had a gun. The man had just moved the weapon from his back pocket to his waistband -- it was mostly hidden under his shirt -- and was in line for communion. And, they added, nobody at the tight-knit parish recognized him as one of the regular cops who attend.

"I said, 'No problem.' Just act normal,'' Keating said. " . . . Don't make eye contact."

Keating, who suspected Kucia was not a threat by the way he was acting, watched him take communion. Keating then genuflected and followed Kucia out of the church where he made small talk on the front steps about the unusually hot weather. Then Keating told Kucia he knew he had a gun.

Kucia allegedly first said he was a cop but then quickly changed his story, saying he'd been robbed and threatened and needed to protect himself. So he was carrying.

"I said you can't do it in church,'' Keating said. "You can't do it anywhere in the city of Chicago.''

Kipka had joined Keating by then and the two made the arrest, also finding a shotgun in Kucia's truck.

Is that you Jake ? This is a direct result of not owning enough guns or failing to use the proper tool for the job . Obviously a “Church Gun “ was called for here .

Ok... he was a stranger. I can understand the concern by the congregation.

I can understand keeping a stranger covered by your own armed members , but to turn him in to the cops ? We have a lot of cops in our congregation and we have to watch them like hawks with so much offering money on the premises .

As I remember, former Texas governor George W. Bush legalized concealed carry in Texas churches. I can say I have a feeling a safety when I am in the presence of a weapon with ammo very close by.
