Art School Displays Painting of Crucifix in Man's Posterior

A major New York art school is displaying sexually explicit paintings that depict a crucifix in a man's rectum and rosaries with male sex organs, among other offensive imagery, according to the Catholic League.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City is hosting the art show, which began May 27 and runs through June 10. In the show is a series of paintings by Felipe Baeza. One painting shows a man with his pants pulled down and a crucifix extending from his rectum. Under the painting it says, "el dia que me converti catolico," which means, "The day I became a Catholic."

Another Baeza piece substitutes a Rosary for the crucifix. Another one shows a man with his pants down and an angel holding two Rosaries with a penis attached to each of them. In yet another painting there is a halo hovering over a naked man with an erection, according to the Catholic League.

Cooper Union was founded by industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper. The school has provided a full-tuition scholarship -- which it says is valued at $30,000 per year -- to every accepted student since 1859.

The school's Web site says of the current exhibit, "The School of Art faculty have selected major pieces by students representing 'the best of' each discipline ranging from sculpture, graphic design and painting to video installations."

Gee! How brave of this twerpy student to attack and denigrate, to show disrepect toward, and to demonstrate intolerance for the Catholic religion. Big "man" there! I am so unimpressed. ( eyeroll)

Do you think for a moment he would have done such a thing to Muslim images. Fat chance!

How very appropriate that this comes but moments after a thread in which an Indian artist trashed Western art and culture as being “junk culture.”

All those disputing the trashiness of our own “culture” need but see this colossal work of nonsense.

The whirring noise is Cooper rolling in his grave because he gave us stalwarts like Felipe Baez (brought up as a Catholic, I would assume) who are using his gift to vent their puny gay spite while the Times and every art journal in the nation drop to their knees in front of him. Upchuck time.

Yelling, marches, chants, deaths. Think any of that will happen? No, because this IS the religion of peace.

These artists are like a bunch of seven-year-old boys who just discovered that everybody poops, so they giggle ceaselessly about it. Just about the same level of maturity. “Oh, look, I have a penis! You have one too! Hahahahahaha...”

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City is hosting the art show.

If it was muslim art or culture the ACLU would be all over it.

We’ve seen these goals before-

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

Who funds the Cooper Union?

I wonder if the good folks at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art would present an exhibition that featured muhammad with a koran in his arse.

And remember the picture of the crucifix in a jar of urine? That was considered art by some.

But, offensive images to Islam are not allowed, because we want to be respectful towards other religions. And, we don’t want to get killed by fanatics. Obviously they don’t have fear of Christian fanatics wanting to do violence to them for their offense to Christianity.

Here’s some hypocrisy, because the politically correct crowd says that violence and terrorism is perpetrated by people of all religions, so we shouldn’t single out Islam. But while they have fear of Islamic radicals doing violence if they offend Islam, they obviously have no fear of Christian radicals doing violence for their offenses to Christian symbols.

Well, I can only hope that some enterprising young artist will skewer the left with similar pieces of ‘art’. As far as this artist goes, finding himself in hell for eternity ought to be enough to convince him of his stupidity.

“Who funds the Cooper Union?”

This year’s benefit will take place at Skylight, a dramatic new events space in Lower Manhattan. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception featuring an extensive Silent Art Auction of small works by some of the country’s most talented artists, followed by a seated dinner and awards presentation. Works are on view at http://www.cooper.edu/urbanvisionaries/auction.html.

Tickets are available for $500, $1,000 and $2,500, and tables at $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.

Many thanks to Trustee Francois deMenil (AR’87) for his generous commitment of $500,000 toward the construction of Cooper Union’s new academic building; and to Lawrence Benenson, also a Trustee, who has made a new committment $100,000 to the Building Fund.

Thanks also to Monica and Theodore Nicholas (CE’58) who are in the process of establishing a $200,000 Charitable Gift Annuity, a gift that pays individuals an income for life and then provides deferred support for the college. Their generous gift planning makes them the newest members of The Society of 1859.

Our gratitude also goes to the generous alumni, faculty, staff and friends whose generous contributions to the Annual Fund have yielded a year-to-date total more than 15 percent greater than it was in 2005.

The Cooper Union recently received bequests from Yaye Togasaki Breitenbach, Fred Philipson (A’41), Sally and George Kligfield (ME’36) and Gordon Magee (Eng’20).
