BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) ― Flying the Confederate flag has long been controversial in Southern states but now it's causing a heated debate at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn. Three seniors who displayed the flag will not be allowed to attend their graduation ceremony Wednesday evening.
"It was sitting like that in the parking lot," said Justin Thompson, as he held a Confederate flag that was hanging from a pole inside a pick-up truck bed.
On Tuesday, three seniors, each with a rebel flag on the back of their pick-ups, parked at Kennedy High School.
"I'm just a country type of person, country music, big trucks and everything, that's basically all it means to me," said Thompson.
"And then I found out later that day that it had been taken off when I got called down to the office," said Dan Fredin, who displayed the flag.
They were suspended and the suspension means they're barred from all school activities including their own graduation ceremony...

Yeah, you’re right, we don’t contribute anything. Mind you, that’s just one state...you want to look at the Midwest as a whole region, let alone “the North”, forget about it. Also, I find it funny that you chose military aircraft as an example of the great contributions of the South, since that’s funded by government money, which kind of underscore my point. I’m sure some Southern Senator had a lot to do with the location of this manufacturing.
Interesting. Do you happen to have a breakdown on the types of Federal spending in each state?
I ask because I suspect that a considerable amount of Federal money spent in the South is defense related. IIRC, the majority of military installations are in the Southern states, as are a number of defense industries.
Taking advantage of a legitimate Federal function (defense) is not quite the same as taking advantage of illegitimate, overreaching Federal programs....assuming that is the case with the Southern states, of course.
My point was as ridiculous as yours. I’m sorry if you didn’t discern the sarcasm. Just be aware that the southern states offer many products and technologies that are affordable and still made in the U.S.A. because they don’t depend on union labor. We enjoy a good standard of living and a high quality housing compared to many other areas of the U.S. You make it sound as if you are still holding a grudge against the South for a war that was fought almost 150 years ago. Get over it.
People who claim the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism are usually the same people who were taught that the ‘Civil War’ was fought over slavery. That’s what I was taught in my California government school. Revisionist history...After seeing the PBS TV Series “The Civil War” I decided to do my own research and studying. It was a much more complicated war than we were taught in school.

Something else that bothers me about this story is the underlying idea that school kids need to be protected from everything offensive, distracting, or controversial. It's almost like kids are being conditioned to be perfect P.C. sheep...the overly litigious employees and parents of the future. I don't think that's healthy.
I understand that schools can't be a free-for-all. But at the same time, kids need to learn that sometimes people are going to hold beliefs they don't like or have a style they don't approve of. When that happens, they shouldn't be taught to expect someone to just banish whatever it is that makes them uncomfortable or excited. Living in a free society requires being able to operate even when the people around you are a little weird. Or a little stupid.
Unfortunately, I don’t, and that’s something I’d like to see. However, given that the poorest states are also disproportionately in the South, I’m willing to bet the majority of the welfare money goes down there too.

She intentionally makes outrageous statements just to get press.
And every time the press soil themselves thinking they have brought down another conservative. If what she stated so outrageously weren't true, she'd be gone by now.
She'd rather resort to mudslinging than an intelligent discussion of the issues.
In the soundbite world of the media, there's no room for intelligent discussion of anything. You want discussion, you should turn off the toob and read a book.
She does much to advance her book sales, but little to advance the conservative cause.
Book sales = profit. 'Nuff said. As for the conservative cause, each who believes in it does what he can because the essence of conservatism is that we don't require some dufus to pull our strings before we can talk. (Although in Ann's case, you can get one of those talking dolls ;)
You don't have to like what another conservative does, You are free to do better if you can.
Don't know that I would characterize it as "hostility", but what would be the appropriate response toward someone who tries to bribe me with my own money? Oh, that's right...he's adding someone else's money to it as well, so that I come out ahead.

Well, reducing the size and power of the Federal government is a goal that both a Yankee conservative such as myself and a Dixie conservative such as yourself can easily both get behind. Minnesota has proven it can be self-sufficient.

I did the same. I spent about 15 years studying it.
It was complicated. It was about more than slavery.
But slavery was THE motivating factor. Any serious study of what the rebels were saying, in speeches, writings, and letters, proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
All wars have multiple causes, and the Civil War is no different. But it never would have happened if 4 million Blacks were not chattel slaves.
Pray heating oil doesn't go much higher, or you're going to have LOTS of 'Yankee' company...
