That, along with the clusterfork at Minot/Barksdale with the five or six nukes that got temporarily lost, are two very obvious reasons. One militia website reported that six left Minot, and five were found the next day at Barksdale. Apparently, they were never missed at Minot. Off we go, Air Force!

Good point. The only thing the US Chair Force is good for is sitting in the rear with the gear (except for the aircrews, which make up about 0.000001% of the USAF). When I was in the Navy, I knew Air Force guys that would throw a tizzy fit and have a midlife crisis over having to do a 90-day deployment to Germany. There's tough duty, go to Germany for 90 days, work bankers hours, and drink German beer with bratwurst at night.

For Chair Force guys, life is tough if:
1. They don't get a choice between Coke and Pepsi.
2. Their barracks cable TV only gets 36 channels instead of the usual 72.
3. They have to walk more than two barracks buildings over to get to the hot-tub.
4. They're in a 24-hour duty status for 3 days a month instead of the usual 1.

A Taiwanese military unit ordered helicopter batteries and received nuclear fuses for ICBMs. What really makes the Air Force look like crap is that the Taiwanese had been trying to give them back for 2 years but nobody would return their e-mails or phone calls.

my comments were not directed at the peronnel of the air force. they were directed at the leadership and the questionable decisions and policies implimented by them. our service people are the best and brightest the world has to offer, but clinton era generals and their ego’s are the problem, not the people. hope this clears up my comments

Wow, it's been a lot of years since I heard that phrase. First heard it when I was going to be assigned there from a year long assignment to a remote Alaska Air Force Radar site (Campion AFS, AK). Wound up being assigned to MacDill AFB, Florida, so never did see Minot.

That was the Air Force circa 1992, things are a lot different now. The days of leisurely peace-time operations are over, every service is working hard. It used to gripe me to be in a 24-hour duty status every 3rd day on a Navy ship docked at a Navy base that had all the appeal of a garbage dump when, down the road, the Air Force guys worked bankers hours with 24-hour-duty once a month, the enlisted had nicer barracks than our Navy officers’ BOQs, they had recreation facilities whose quality rivaled anything out in town, and their food was 10 times better.

Those days are over now, budgets are chopped and everybody is in the grind.

The Air Force takes great care of its people. It has always had the highest retention rates of the services. Other services have copied many of the “quality of life” practices of the Air Force. This is a good thing. All of the services deserve bases as nice as the Air Force. Our military members deserve as high a quality of day to day living conditions as we can give them.
On the other hand conditions in the field can be harsh for the members of any branch of service. They are what they must be to get the job done.

There were six American Army divisions from 1st Army. They were 1st, 29th, 101st, 82nd, 4th, and 90th. There were also two Ranger btns and an infantry RCT. There were no American Marine formations (I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a number of Marines attached to units to observe, but I don’t know if that happened or not).

The British landed with their 2nd Army which included the 3rd (iirc) Canadian infantry division, and some Royal Marines.

Thank you! I get a bit hot under the collar when I encounter implications that the Air Force is somehow not pulling it’s weight. Between all the things I already listed AND going through an Inspection every year since 2003, personally, my head’s about to explode from the strain of it all! Nothing compared to being in a war zone for a year, but hard work nonetheless.

Did some time , albeit short time at Shemya and Clear and then stationed at Fairbanks for 4 years. My SAC days were at Kincheloe in the UP of MI and DM in AZ, Little Rock and McConnell.

Spent a few weeks at Minot AFB playing in the silos on EOD training and haven’t missed that place since .......The movie Fargo actually gave me flashbacks !!.......:o)

The Air Force was told to get the drones up and running in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2 years now but it’s been like pulling teeth in getting it going. The Air Force has purposely tried to distance themselves from these combat situations because they might miss the next air show.

In Billy Mitchell's day, the advocates of a future Air Force complained that the Army brass did not understand and had little interest in strategic air power.

Today, the Army complains that the Air Force does not understand and had little interest in ground support operations.

Maybe it's time to reestablish the U.S. Army Air Corps and remove all restrictions from what the Army can do in regards to air power.
