Britain is now more dangerous than the Balkans, it was revealed yesterday.
You are more likely to be assaulted, robbed and burgled in Britain than in the region of southeast Europe once synonymous with war and gangsters, according to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Your car is at least ten times more likely to be stolen in Britain than in Albania, Croatia or the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Western Europe suffers from double the amount of burglary, over four times as much assault, and 15 times as much robbery as the Balkans, the report revealed.
Bringing criminals to justice is also more likely over there.
There are more police and more public prosecutors in Albania than there are in England and Wales, per head of population.
Even impoverished Moldova has more judges than we do.
The wide-ranging report, entitled 'Crime and its Impact on the Balkans', showed that while Britain and other western European countries continue to suffer from a crime wave, Balkan countries have shed their badlands image and have many types of crime under control.
'It seems that an era of lawlessness is passing,' the report's authors said.
'South East Europe does not, in fact, suffer from high rates of crime, at least in terms of the range of offences commonly referred to as conventional crime: murder, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, theft and the like.
'In fact, most of the region is safer than Western Europe in this respect.'
The region, shattered little more than a decade ago by bitter ethnic warfare, is now 'one of the safer areas of the world.'
Figures on vehicle theft were particularly telling. In Britain, 1,330 vehicles in every 100,000 are reported stolen annually, compared to 166 in Croatia, 113 in Macedonia and just 90 in Albania.
The figures are considered reliable, the report pointed out, because victims almost always report the crime in the hope that their car, bike or van is recovered.
The report suggested crime might be low in the Balkans because there is not so much of a gap between the rich and the poor.
It said: 'Income inequality is regarded as the most robust quantitative correlate of crime rates.
'Social inequities give rise to a sense of relative deprivation, which can be used to justify both property and violent crime.
'But the long history of socialist regimes in the region flattened income differentials.
'While this is changing in a free market environment, the standard indicators of inequality are not pronounced in this region.'
It also might have something to do with the justice system. In England and Wales there are just five judges per 100,000 citizens, the lowest proportion among the countries examined, the report pointed out.
In Croatia there are 42, while even Albania, one of the most backward countries in the region, has 11. Moldova just beats England and Wales with seven.
England and Wales also have fewer policemen and women. There are just 261 per 100,000 citizens compared to 353 in Albania and 427 in Croatia.
There are also fewer prosecutors (5.2 per 100,000 citizens) than in Croatia (12.3) , Albania (12.7), Macedonia (8.6) and Moldova (16.6).
The study looked at nine Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia and compared the statistics it found with samples from Western Europe and around the world.
England needs to get back to a law and order society. It will in time—even if its the Moslem’s who will impose it! Laws do not an orderly society make—its all in the enforcement!
Would Churchill have put up with this? I think not. Mark my words, the time for an orderly society will come and in exchange so called “rights” will be removed in the process.
I say, what good are rights if the society is a lawless jungle ruled by gangs?
Memphis, Camden, most of Philadelphia, Jackson, East St. Louis, etc. are probably more dangerous than Zimbabwe, let alone the UK.
True but a Mexican immigrant at least is Catholic, has a connection to European colonization and heritage (at least if they are Mestizos) and don’t see it as their goal to convert you or something worse if you refuse. Also, Americans have moral standards, pretty close to Mexican, so youths don’t grow up either rebelling from their parents (rejecting religion can also lead to rejecting the morality of your culture) or going totally extreme and seeking Jihad. Think of how we here at the forums jump on Swedes, Brits, etc. for not having traditional values anymore — think how Muslim innigrants from north Africa and Pakistan must feel in these cultures.
You forgot midnight basketball.
Britain seemed to work fairly well when it was only inhabited by the British.
They created a monster with their “celebrate diversity” mentality. What a bungled social engineering experiment that has turned out to be.
True, now if you look at Polish or Russian (ethnic Russians) living in Britain you will have a low crime rate due to cultural connections as they are basically European and Christian. It’s when the differences are greater that problems arise.
See, when “the man” is not “holding you back” there is no excuse for failure.
Diversity without Christianity is poisonous morale-killing dreck.
In many respects we also have a far lower crime rate in the "traditional" crimes mentioned in the article, provided the black and Hispanic populations are excluded. Extensive exercise of Second Amendment rights also helps to reduce crime, someting the Brits aren't able to do.
Enoch Powell was right.
You are on to a loser if you think Britain is going to see legalising the carrying of handguns in public as the solution to our problems, because as many gleefully point out, America’s murder rate is much higher than that of the UK, even if other crimes aren’t. Speak to a Briton about introducing American-style gun laws, and all they will see is images of feral thugs who at the moment are largely confined to fists or crude implements tooling themselves up like Rambo and ramping up the carnage and devastation.
It’s worth pointing out that Japan is far more crime free than either the US or the UK, and their gun laws make Britain’s look positively permissive. The problem isn’t guns, but society. It needs to be tackled at it’s root by somehow reversing the welfare dependency culture, which while it had the best of intentions when it was set up did not foresee that it would lead to an entitlement culture. This I believe is a key cause of this malaise. The building of more prisons and the reintroduction of hard labour as part of a sentence would probably do it’s part in A) keeping the scum element off the streets and B) dettering them from ever wanting to go to prison again, as opposed to the current ‘Butlins holiday camp’ set up prison system we have now which whilst still a horrible place for a middle-class and generally law-abiding person to end up, is no terror for the lowest orders and habitual criminals who are simply mixing with their own...
If you'd turn the question around, I'd give you this answer:
What does Albania, Serbia, Croatia and other Balkin states HAVE that Britain DOES NOT have?
Guns, and the people who are willing to use them.
Yes, I think we all understood the implication, without it having to be spelt out.
I think it’s a simplistic analasyse, but there you go...
Buahahahahahahh!
Try burglery , rape , or theft in the Balkans. There a perp will get a surplus AK-47 stuck up his butt, with one trigger pull on full auto.
Thats why crime is low in the Balkans.
Count on it.
"The report said the trend of reduced crime is likely to continue, "since the region lacks the usual vulnerabilities that lead to crime elsewhere in the world: mass poverty, income inequality, runaway urbanization and large-scale youth unemployment."
The smuggling of drugs, guns and humans through the region is on the decline, although the Balkans remains the main transit zone for heroin destined for Western Europe, with about 100 tons estimated to pass through the region each year, Costa said.
Albania has the worst crime in the region and remains the "soft underbelly" of the Balkans for Mafia rings, Costa said. And still, the report said, "on average, Southeast Europeans are more likely to face demands for bribes than people in other regions of the world."
Costa urged countries of the region to strengthen the rule of law, and called on the international community, particularly the European Union, to provide the support needed to further reduce vulnerability to crime and instability in the region.
He said fighting crime in Kosovo remains a priority. Kosovo, which has been run by the U.N. since war ended there in 1999, declared independence from Serbia in February.
Touched a British nerve, did I? Anyway, I was merely stating the question posed would’ve made more sense if switched around. I apologize for insulting your intelligence, but then again the answer wasn’t directed towards you.
Coming to a neighborhood near you! As we continue to celebrate diversity instead of celebrating what units us as a nation you can expect the Balkanization of America to continue full speed ahead. We are committing cultural suicide on a massive scale and no one seems willing to stop it. I fear for this great republic
Think you forgot about the Albanians, who are a problem not just for Serbia -- but also for Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece.
Can you please explain to me what Enoch Powell said? I honestly don’t know.
“Living in Britain is Now More Dangerous Than the Balkans, Report Reveals”
Must be a mistake - after all, they’ve outlawed the private ownership of firearms.
