"I have not heard of any educational institution penalizing a student for excellence – for completing a demanding set of classes 'too quickly,' " said her father, Deepak Datta. "Anjali's experience will surely send a strong negative signal to other talented students trying to excel....

here's a good quote...Is it all about the $$$$ (to the district) or the power to mold/destroy the young mind(s)....or both?

Everyone knows the school will be sued if they don’t follow the written rules so why are we mad at the school?

Shouldn’t we all be mad at lawyers?

The girl was also denied a scholarship, which went to the 2nd place student instead.

And she was also advised by a counselor that her graduating in three years would not jeapordize her valedictory status.

Wouldn't you hate to be that counselor? Wonder if the parents have any legal recourse for malpractice?

> Follow the money -- somebody is getting a payoff for this travesty.

What's that scholarship worth? Gotta be at least a few thousand dollars.

Somebody is either getting money or blowjobs to hand this over. It stinks.

I decided to take it easy the last 2 years instead of graduating early. My last semester was a gym class and just filling out college aps. Wild times...

> We should each donate $20 to create a scholarship for her. Call it the Award for Dealing with Stupid Government Officials

Good thought.

Except that an award with that name would have us ponying up $20 each about every 15 minutes for the rest of time....

nevertheless I agree with the sentiment.

Local politics are the most corrupt, and it doesn't get more local than a school district.

The rules, grades, ratings, etc. are generally manipulated so that the "right" people get it.

The truth of it is that the rest of life is that way too. Even the best manager is going to be influenced at least some by competent brown-nosing. You will go a lot farther making sure you are the right person instead of just being right.

That’s my question. Just what the hell does 4.0 mean?

I would hate to be the counselor, but he or she should have really checked out the award and scholarship, and consulted with others, to ensure that the right advice was given.

Something that unusual should definitely be concurred on amongst maybe a panel of people. And in retrospect, it’s too bad the girl didn’t get anything in writing verifying what she was told.

As a “B” student most of my life, I really admire this girl’s accomplishments. This is a heartbreaker, that’s for sure.

I wonder what they consider "a lot" of thought.

Interesting question. My God, the rules might be violated! We can't make an ethical stand on this issue!

re:Wonder if the parents have any legal recourse for malpractice? )))

LOL--nope. One reason there are quite a few doctors who look forward to socialized medicine--lack of accountability when you're Government.

4.0 means all A's in all regular classes.

Most districts award higher grade points for Honors or Pre-AP classes. Harder course = higher grade points.

Call it the Award for Dealing with Stupid Government Officials

They’d just take it away from her ...or the school would make her give it away if she wanted her diploma .... my boss has turned away several applicants with HS diploma’s because they could neither speak or write coherently or had the basic concepts of math. I saw their diploma’s ... they were Xeroxed. Originals.
I saw my great grandad’s HS diploma ... it was a work of art .....

23 valedictorians

That's to match the 57 assistant principals. The public school system has become ridiculous.

“I have not heard of any educational institution penalizing a student for excellence – for completing a demanding set of classes ‘too quickly,’ “

Sure you have. It happens all the time now in “liberal” and “politically correct” America. She’s just not “disadvantaged” enough. Those darned Indians and Asians study too much and work too hard and don’t get in trouble with drugs and sex, etc. It’s not fair if they aren’t a bunch of illiterate goof offs like the rest of the “real” Americans.

Now if she were black or Hispanic, they’d have to give her the award.

Anyone who spends their lives policing government rules without allowing even a hint of common sense to intervene in their decisions is brain dead or a liberal!

Give it to her anyway, and subject the officials to a $%#@storm of negative publicity and a name-and-shame campaign if they object, to the point of putting up posters around their neighborhoods. Embarrass the hell out of them.
