Virginias unemployment rate fell 0.6 percentage point, from 3.9 percent in March to 3.3 percent in April. Employment increased mostly because of the increase in tourism jobs, construction work and the end of the strike...

As with Oklahoma.
Sadly, dips are a significant portion of the Virginia population now.
Good point. I wonder what the unemployment rate is in Maryland, particularly Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, which border DC and VA.
No...Obama won’t change a thing. He’ll make everything worse.
As for the Volvo strike in Dublin, VA. I live in Pulaski County and had to drive past those pathetic whiners every morning. They had a COFFIN next to the entrance of the plant with a sign above it that read, “scabs here” and an arrow pointing to the coffin. LOVELY bunch of overweight, overdrugged, big mouthed loosers!!! We blogged like crazy on a local site and it still amazes me how pompus they were. Acted as if Volvo owed them all golden spoons for their mouths. Shouted all this solidarity crap...but now 1/2 of them are getting laid off. SERVES THEM RIGHT!!
I think the reason Dublin, VA was used as an example is because our economy here sucks. Sucks bad. Volvo’s strike cause many others to be laid off because their employers support Volvo re: fabrication and such that the plant doesn’t handle.
Reason it appeared unemployment went down was probably nothing more than 2000 Volvo workers (finally) going back to work and the hundreds of other laid off for a few months also going back. Certainly isn’t because there is any new business around here..... With only about 30K people in this county, you can imagine the impact that number of workers had on the numbers.
“Virginias unemployment rate fell 0.6 percentage point, from 3.9 percent in March to 3.3 percent in April.”
This can’t be correct.
For months we have been hearing from the left wind mediots about the current recession being even worse than the other GW recession which was worse than the Hoover depression.
Now we will hear from Free Republic’s gloom and doomers.
hmmm, Article seems to have left out that category...you may have something, there! Another 'Change' the bamamaniacs will help fix, I'm sure!
We call that 'Strike Math'. Most unions don't understand that simple equation! Unfortunately, this summer is likely to see more of the same misfortune that befell your county! And like you say, unions take advantage of the 'worst' site possible to maximize the pain to the economy! Yep, that's what we need 'more unions' ...NOT!
that would be funny if I didn’t still see them everywhere
Amen to that!
Actually, it may be possible the employment numbers are correct. We really do have only about 30K in our county. The strike was like 2 or 3 months long and then everyone went back (even the supporting companies). 2000+ workers within our small population would make a larger percentage in numbers than if we were in Tampa per se with 3 million.
That said...watch for NEXT month’s numbers. 1200 got laid off within 6 weeks after the strike and they only got a couple weeks notice. Those percentages will go back up on the UNemployment side.
Although I love Virginia...gotta admit we have some strange and backward folks around here. I”m originally from Tampa, so I appreciate the country and LACK of millions of people and the number of cars on the road. I also appreciate well thought out progress. Around here...another drug store and Dollar Store is about as progressive as we get. (let’s just say we have ONE ABC liquor store in the entire county. Honest! Closed on Sundays too so we must stock up on Saturdays :>)
We had the opportunity for a new Saturn plant right near Volvo. As you can imagine, like 6 landowners who were about 80 years old stopped it over the “view”. Then, Pepsi wanted to put in a plant and the overly retarded and overly aged town council voted is down because (ahem) we didn’t have enough water shed to support it. What? We have a 60+ acre resevoir that is no longer used...boarder the New River...have Claytor lake which is thousands of acres...have underground LAKES in the area. OH well...they simply like to watch things remain the same in their own little worlds while destroying it for the rest of us. So, what did Pepsi do? They bought a parcel about 10 miles outside of our county in Wytheville and gave THEM over 1000 jobs.
How long before Mark Warner gets all the credit and Obama wants him for his VP?
Now we will hear from Free Republics gloom and doomers.
Perish the thought, but true.
Yes, it can.
Now we will hear from Free Republics gloom and doomers.
The long-term outlook for the U.S. (on average) is pretty gloomy, no thanks to our idiot Government! However, notice the "on average" part. Some areas could enter deep economic doldrums, while the sun will be shining, economically speaking, in other regions. And, fundamentally, life will still go on. Folks will find ways to make do, like they always have.
How can this be? The unemployment rate in Michigan is 6.9%.
Everyone knows that we’re all the same and that Michigan’s unemployment rate is because of George Bush. Time for Governor Granholm to raise taxes again in Michigan. That’s progress (as in Progressive)!
She’s just trying to give Michigan the upper hand. Maybe she should visit Virginia.
Ok, so, just so we’re all clear, unemployment under 4% represents an economy with *full* employment, and is considered an overheating labor market. There just isn’t enough workers if the unemployment is so low.
Yeah right... Wait till Obama gets ahold of it... Unemployment will run rampant.... nationwide most likely average 8-10 percent... but you will all be told that is an OK rate... its to be expected I mean Bush screwed up so many things that its gonna take 20 years to fix it all...
Democrats will ride the hate Bush train well into the next decade... most Americans are ignorant enough to bye it too...
To the uninformed, making things worse IS change.
Bush's fault.
