CALIFORNIA: Assembly OKs paid sick leave for all
Sacramento Bee ^ | 5/29/8 | Jim Sanders

California would become the first state to require paid sick leave for every worker under legislation passed Wednesday by the Assembly.

The measure would allow the sick leave to be used for a personal illness, to care for a sick family member, or to recover from domestic violence or sexual assault.

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco, said her Assembly Bill 2716 would protect more than 5 million Californians – about a third of the work force – who are forced to choose between working while sick or losing pay.

"(It's) a win-win for workers and employers alike and is an important part of maintaining a healthy economy here in California," Ma said.

When employers offer paid sick days, employee morale is better, turnover is less, and health care costs decrease, Ma said.

The Assembly approved the bill, 43-25, with no Republican support. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken no position on the legislation, which now goes to the Senate.

Opponents said AB 2716 would impose a one-size-fits-all mandate that many small businesses simply could not afford.

"It's an anti-business mentality," said Assemblyman Bill Maze, R-Visalia.

Assemblyman Tom Berryhill, R-Modesto, said the bill targets small businesses that are the "backbone of the economy."

"The message it sends is that the liberal side of the aisle continues to do job-killing bills that drive jobs out of California," Berryhill said.

Under AB 2716, businesses of 10 employees or more would be required to provide up to nine days of sick leave per year. Smaller firms would provide up to five days.

In my career there was never a paid vacation or a paid sick day. In fact, the old saying was “you don’t call in sick, you call in dead.”

Is there going to be a limit on how many paid days off you get?

How about day laborers? Do they get sick pay?

What about temporary or contract workers?

"(It's) a win-win for workers and employers alike

That so? So why do we need a law then, wouldn't they just naturally collaborate if it was 'win win' for both of them?

Expect to see businesses “compensate” by reducing PTO accrual rates accordingly. So, yeah, you get your 10 sick days, but your three weeks of Paid time Off is now just one.

Also, expect to see a WHOLE lot of folks taking “sick days” around seasonal holidays.

“Yeah, boss, that flu was a real drag; kept me out all week long. On the up side, I’ve got 600 pounds of fresh elk in my freezers.”

“Yeah, boss, it was mono. Good thing it was mild or it’d ‘ve been a whole lot more than just two weeks. I had to go all the way to the Kenai River to find relief. Fortunately, it worked wonders for me. You like salmon??”

“Want to bet that she has never created or run a business of any sort?”

You’re right. According to her page on Wikipedia, she went straight from college (degree in “taxation”!) to politics, and has gotten donations from some fishy sources, including the infamous Paw family of Daly City (associates of Norman Hsu).

“you don’t call in sick, you call in dead’

I always tell people when they ask me when I’m going to retire; I expect I’ll take a half day off from work for my funeral and be back to work in the afternoon.

Government workers are so used to holidays, (Confederate Memorial Day for Texas DOT) sick pay that they can bank, vacations, and no pressure that they think we all must be entitled to that lifestyle. I can’t afford to run for Congrees, can’t take the pay cut - but how come they all get rich??

California is a lost cause. The U.S. should withdraw immediately.

Like all Utopians, poor Fiona is just a bit confused. This latest foolishness on the part of the California "we can have it all" faction is, in fact, a win -win situation for the states and their workers who will benefit from the businesses that will be joining the continuing exodus from the Land of Fruits and Nuts.

Here's a link to her bio before she was somebody. As you can see, she's been to school a lot. She's a CPA, but obviously she was signing her checks on the back instead of on the front. If you click on the link regarding her political philosophy, you can see that she believes home-ownership is a right for all San Franciscans. Is it possible she is personally responsible for the California real estate meltdown because of her advocacy of marginal mortgages?

When employers offer paid sick days, employee morale is better, turnover is less, and health care costs decrease, Ma said.

Next Steps:

Pay them all a minimum of $100,000 per year. It reduces turnover costs.

Give them free healthcare with no deductibles. It makes for healthier employees and reduces healthcare costs. It also reduces time off the job which increases productivity.

Reduce the workweek to three, 7 hour days. This will increase their ‘engagement’ which leads to increased profits.

Provide free lunches. This will reduce time away from the office and increase productivity.

Provide free transportation. This will save them money, become more engaged, and reduce your carbon taxes at the same time.

Ain’t socialism great??!!!

Where does it end?

With a 20 hour work week for 40 hours pay. Three month vacation, preferably June thru August. All holidays off, with pay, including Ground Hog’s day and of course, Cinco de Mayo. And guaranteed employment for life –no layoffs or firings.

Let’s look at the brighter side of this.

* Housing prices in Las Vegas are going to rebound.
* California’s power generation and grid capacity will become adequate.
* Out of state tourists like me and Mrs. Tick won’t have to put up with all those darn local granola heads vacationing in OUR favorite spots.
* The number of Congressional seats allocated to California liberals will decrease

Every ignorant liberal cloud has a silver lining

Well, there will be a lot of lay offs coming. To keep the employee count low. God, I am glad I moved from that state.
