Fresh off a successful campaign to get polar bears declared a threatened species, a conservation group today petitioned to provide Endangered Species Act protections to the bears' main prey because of global warming.
The Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service to list ringed seals and two other species - spotted and bearded seals - as threatened or endangered.
All three seals live in the Bering, Chukchi or Beaufort seas off Alaska's coast and depend on sea ice that is receding rapidly, according to the petition.
"Ice is essential for them to give birth and rear their pups," said Shaye Wolf, a biologist and the lead author of the petition. "They won't be able to reproduce without ice."
The seals also rely on ice for molting.
"They have to replenish their fur every year," Wolf said from her San Francisco office. "They rely on the safety of the sea ice to molt their fur."

I think that all endangered species should come under the witness protection program, or some such. They should all be collected and transplanted to … well, somewhere … for their own protection. ;-)

If these loony tunes get the seals listed also, then when a polar bear eats a seal, will the polar bear be forced to become a Dimocrat as punishment?
Kempthorne was on Glenn Beck the day the polar bears were listed swearing up and down that it wasn’t going to happen to other species too.

The spotted seals are good eating, polar bears will have to compete with the Chukchi of Russia regardless of their status.
These seals have NEVER been endangered, EVER.
They’ve done just fine through all the climatic ups and downs of the Ice Ages and Now they’re going to be “threatened”?!
For crying out loud, even the World Conservation Union lists all 3 of these species as “Least Concern” in the “Lower Risk” category.
They’re about as threatened as a cockroach...
WTF? If it gets too warm, they won't need fur. ;-P
