A conservation group gave notice Tuesday that it will sue to force federal action on a petition to list the Pacific walrus as a threatened species because of threats from global warming and offshore petroleum development.
The deadline was May 8 for an initial 90-day review of the petition by the U.S. Department of the Interior, according to Center for Biological Diversity attorney Brendan Cummings.
The group filed the petition in February.
Shaye Wolf, a biologist and lead author of the petition, said Arctic sea ice is disappearing faster than the best predictions of climate models.
"As the sea ice recedes, so does the future of the Pacific walrus," she said.
The conservation group was one of three that successfully petitioned to have polar bears listed as threatened because of sea ice loss caused by global warming, a decision announced May 14 by Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne. That listing also followed court action to force deadline decisions.

Floodgates are open now. Really, all species are “threatened” by global warming since their population numbers now have little to do with their endangered status.
I'm Saved!!!
It’s getting overdue to make conservation groups feel a little threatened, themselves.
Ever see the scene in Godfather where the rich idiot wakes up and finds the horse’s head in bed with him? Something like that with dead walrusses might be what it finally takes to make some sort of an impression on these green psychopaths.
That’ll keep the left-coast free of drilling...
Dang! I just lost a 25-cent bet. I thought for sure it would be the narwhal listed next.
Thanks Bush & Kempthorne. The door is wide open now.
And he has the nerve to talk about appeasers..........
BTW, here's another clue for you all: THE WALRUS WAS PAUL!!!
Expert texpert choking smoker
Dont you know the joker laffs at you?
Goo goo gajoob
I haven’t even calmed down from the Polar Bear listing yet, now this? There will be violence provoked over this and the greenies couldn’t care less how many human die in the firestorm. Humans are the bottom of the food chain in their minds.
Does that mean they will stop hunting them in Bristol Bay before they use it as an excuse to stop the future oil and gas drilling?

Paul wasn’t the Walrus! I was the Walrus!! I only said he was the Walrus to be nice!! - Genius is Pain, John Lennon
Next on the list is fish - especially salmon. There goes the fishing industry.
Walrus endangered? YouTube shows it having over 2,995,349 views in the past year and a half.

One of the great all time lyrics:
“Yellow mellow custard dripping from a dead dog’s eye”
Natural Mortality
Walruses are preyed upon by polar bears, killer whales, and man. The magnitude of natural mortality is unknown but is assumed to be low, given the population’s low productivity. Eskimo hunters from St. Lawrence Island have described walruses becoming emaciated after becoming entrapped in heavy ice. It is probable that in some instances those walruses starve to death but no documentation of such events exists.
So, heavy ice is the enemy which means Climate warming is GOOD for them. Plus protecting the polar bears is BAD for them since they are enemy #1.
