McCain: Maybe we don’t need Yucca

WASHINGTON — Yucca Mountain dropped back into the presidential race today when Sen. John McCain suggested the planned nuclear waste dump outside of Las Vegas may not be needed after all.

Among the remaining presidential contenders, McCain has been the lone supporter of Yucca Mountain, making him the odd candidate out among Nevadans who overwhelmingly oppose the repository. Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama have both assured Nevada they would oppose the dump.

But in a talk on nuclear security at the University of Denver, McCain offered another approach as part of global efforts to watchdog civilian nuclear power:

“I would seek to establish an international repository for spent nuclear fuel that could collect and safely store materials overseas that might otherwise be reprocessed to acquire bomb-grade materials. It is even possible that such an international center could make it unnecessary to open the proposed spent nuclear fuel storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.”

Up in Reno, the Gazette-Journal’s Anjeanette Damon was among the first to nab McCain’s prepared comments this morning with this entry. She notes: “In his last visit to Nevada, a Vegas fundraiser in March, McCain began using the George W. Bush line about relying on science to determine if the site is safe. The international repository line is new for McCain.”

It would be safer right where it is than in the hands of some nebulous “International Commission”!

Certainly better than leaving it in the hands of someone who may be an enemy 10 years down the road.

OK McMoron - just exactly where are you proposing this site to be?

What an idiot!
McCain or Obama - out of 300,000,000 people this is what we get?

Let’s get a constitutional amendment that will do away with the president and congress for four years and turn everything over to town halls.

Just when ya think McLame is the best of a rather lame lot he opens his pie hole and looks stupid AGAIN.
Let’s just keep storing Nuke waste helter skelter everywhere
and under poor control.
Now as for that amnesty b.s.

That so called spent fuel still has 96 % of its energy available. Idiot Carter signed the Non-proliferation treaty that stopped us from removing the plutonium contamination from the fuel (reprocessing). We are going to need the “spent fuel” to power this country if the Global Warming hoax is used to stop our use of fossil fuels.

I’m about 10 miles from the Hanford Reservation. $ Billions have been spent here to prepare liquid waste from weapons production for burial at Yucca Mountain. It will be turned into glass at a plant that is now under construction.

The Yucca Mountain dump site is a reality, not proposed, so why was all the money spent to build it if it can’t be used? If Nevada wants to repay us for the money they got for construction, maybe another site can be built.(Fat chance).

Decades were spent analyzing the site. They might have come up with a good one.

I have to question any true conservative, which should be the bulk of posters & lurkers who would vote for this fool. It is totally impossible for me to do such. However, this is just what the elites in the New World Order have fought for over the past century. We true conservatives need to find a 3rd party & unite behind it this election & let a candidate know that w/o our votes they can not win an election. I say the Constitution Party is probably the best 3rd party. We can’t support this goofball.

CP may be an option this year, but 2012 we all better be FALCONS.

Maybe we dont need Yucca Mtn...

Maybe McCain will restart the AVLIS program we had here(which was killed by Clinton in ‘93) or purchase the same technology from the French or Japanese - that’s how they deal with the waste from all their nuc plants. Either way, we need nuc plants here and McCain is for them, unlike the other two clowns.

Unfortunately we can't even build an oil refinery in America let alone a nuke plant. John McCain and his magical unicorns won't change that fact.

OK McMoron - just exactly where are you proposing this site to be?

I would put it in the NTS, where Yucca Mountain itself is. Because of its history as a nuclear test site, it's already the most secure place on the continent. Although storing the waste at Yucca for another generation would make more economic sense than jumping into recycling now, setting up a Tsukuba-class recycling facility on our own soil might be the best move politically. At one stroke it would eliminate the nuclear-waste issue and the uranium-shortage issue. It would employ a lot of those nuclear engineers who have been sitting around doing nothing since the Boomers got into politics. Bringing in nuclear waste from other countries would mean free new fuel for our own energy independence.

My thought is that by the time they really get going with the facility, they will be excavating the “waste” back out for recycling into hyper-safe nuke reactors. The energy picture will eventually lead there, no matter what.

The facility will eventually become a curiosity, tourist destination and maybe a catastrophe shelter. For the time being, Nevada should settle down. The risk is in their imaginations.

I say blast the crap in to space, aimed at the sun, leaving the earth via a trajectory taking it directly over Cuba, just in case.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com i am with you... but if they won't let us use it, give-em this as their only other option.

and once its ground and vitrified in a high lead formula, it kinda doesn't matter where it goes after that.
