WASHINGTON Yucca Mountain dropped back into the presidential race today when Sen. John McCain suggested the planned nuclear waste dump outside of Las Vegas may not be needed after all.
Among the remaining presidential contenders, McCain has been the lone supporter of Yucca Mountain, making him the odd candidate out among Nevadans who overwhelmingly oppose the repository. Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama have both assured Nevada they would oppose the dump.
But in a talk on nuclear security at the University of Denver, McCain offered another approach as part of global efforts to watchdog civilian nuclear power:
I would seek to establish an international repository for spent nuclear fuel that could collect and safely store materials overseas that might otherwise be reprocessed to acquire bomb-grade materials. It is even possible that such an international center could make it unnecessary to open the proposed spent nuclear fuel storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.
Up in Reno, the Gazette-Journals Anjeanette Damon was among the first to nab McCains prepared comments this morning with this entry. She notes: In his last visit to Nevada, a Vegas fundraiser in March, McCain began using the George W. Bush line about relying on science to determine if the site is safe. The international repository line is new for McCain.

FWIW
Greenpeace is going to have a field day with this one.
man, he will say anything to get elected!
I’ve changed my mind. Can I take the blue pill?
He doesn’t know where to put it either.
Don’t worry, I’m sure Iran or someone else will allow us to pay them handsomely to take our waste.
What an idiot.
The whackos have been complaining about transporting waste across the country- how do they propose we ship it overseas?
We have a state of the art nuc waste storage facility that exceeds any standards in the world. As soon as it opens for business we can start expanding nuc production from our existing power plants without building anything else.
I defy McPain to define a SAFER more expedient location that can be ready sooner. What and where is he thinking? Ukraine? Russia? China? Yeah, that works.
Here we go again!
McCrazy’s back on the stump.
What a Chump!
Election rhetoric. Where do you think we should put it?
Yucca. That is what it was built for, with your and my $$
--and I live about 70 miles from the repository---
I agree.
Do you think it should be there?
How did things like this come to be federal issues?
It seems like it should be up to individual states whether or not they want drill for oil, build refineries, host waste, etc.
Can we put McKook in the repository?
McCain should propose the internationa storage site to be placed on top of ANWR oil deposits. That way, he’ll piss everybody off at once.
Because we have a Dept of Energy. Let’s get rid of it and 50% of the est of the fed gov.
