"In World War Two we didn't have the concept of post traumatic stress syndrome. People had to basically handle it on their own," he said. Referring to an uncle who had been one of the first U.S. troops into Auschwitz, the concentration camp, Obama said: "The story in the family is he came home and just went up in the attic."

I thought Stanley Ann was an only child. Or is he referring to his uncle on his father’s side? Were there Kenyans in the Soviet Army?

"American troops were NEVER in Auschwitz ever? That seems odd to me."
Correct. Auschwitz was in Poland, several hundred miles to the east of the final demarcation lines between US and Soviet forces.
Dachau is near Munich and was liberated by the 42nd Infantry Division, US 7th Army. There were other camps liberated by US forces, to be sure. We should be sure to run down the details of whether Obama had an uncle in US forces in Germany in 1945 before we assume none of the story is true, but the vital Auschwitz detail is certainly false. Maybe another concentration camp is involved, but definitely not Auschwitz. It's possible that over the years someone else started telling the story that way and it's all that Obama heard. I'm not defending him just saying we need to try to nail down the facts before saying HE made it up - it may well be something that's been told to him by his mother or grandparents.

Actually the name Mooseberg rings a bell in my memory. My dad passed away over 30 years ago, so my memory is fuzzy on the details.
Weird thing is one of the first POW's he saw was a fellow who was a neighbor and attended the same schools with him when they were kids.
I recall dad saying after they liberated one of the camps, they did not take many prisoners who were in the SS.

If Obama doesn’t know that Auschwitz is in Poland and American soldiers did not liberate it he is unqualified to be the President. If McCain had made a gaffe of this magnitude the MSM would be all over the story.

I agree, he is unqualified to be President, based upon this and many other items.
All I’m saying is we need to run down any details before making a big issue of it b/c if it did turn out he had a relative who was at, e.g, the Dachau liberation, then the MSM will counter-attack against any insinuations that he made it all up entirely. [that would still be a huge gaffe in my eyes, but not for the Obama-loving, liberal-protecting MSM]
It is possible that some inaccurate family lore has been passed to him that had some rough basis in fact although it has been much distorted or exaggerated through the years. Or it’s possible that it’s all a crock. I just think we need to know the facts that he did not provide before we make too big a noise about it.

As wideawake pointed out, his mom was an only child, hence no maternal (white) uncle.
Unfortunately, Obama’s series of lies here is just too big, and his supporters will continue to support him.
Maybe Olberman or Russert will go bonkers over this (I need a good laugh now and again).

As wideawake points out, Stanley (Obama’s mom) was an only child.
We can work on great-uncle, but it’s far more likely that his great-uncle came under sniper fire in Tusla than liberated a Nazi death camp and lived in the attic thereafter.

I agree with your approach.
Once again, however, it demonstrates that his staff are absolutely clueless.
Obama doesn't have any American uncles, and if he had actually had American uncles, they would have been too young to serve, since his grandfather was born in 1918 and his grandmother was born in 1922.
Every campaign staffer should realize that if their candidate is going to discuss a real person, his PR people need to know.

Maybe that was another "uncle" who parachuted behind the lines to work with Tito's partisans.
It will be incredible if Obama just made this story up, not realizing it could be checked (and he's too ignorant to know how preposterous the claim about Auschwitz is because he has no idea where Auschwitz really was, just "somewhere in Europe").

He said his uncle was among the first US troops to visit there. Which uncle? Obama's mother had no siblings. His father was not American.

The questions then are: What was his grandfather's name? his unit? his dates of service? his dates of service with that unit? when did they enter the camp? do the unit records support Barry's assertion? did they physically enter the camp itself or simply visit one of the satellite camps? does Barry have any evidence to support his assertion that his grandfather was one of those who entered the camp? Are there other soldiers who can corroborate Barry's assertion?
Completely, utterly, irrelevant.
Look at how Obama phrased the assertion. It's a "story in the family", so the only thing that really needs to be accurate is that ... it's a "story in the family". And if this starts to snowball, that's EXACTLY how it'll be played: Obama has already thrown a willingness to throw his grandmother under the political bus ... why not his ptsd-afflicted "uncle"?
Guess it's ok that he didn't take questions after the speech. Afterall, would anyone in the MSM follow-up with "Senator, could you please tell us what the meaning of "is" is?".

Obama says that his father was one of the “first American troops to go to Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps”. He is lying. I am pretty sure that the Soviets did not invite Obama’s grand uncle (?) to Auschwitz and in any case the Soviets liberated the camp.

So he actually did say that his uncle, his mother’s brother, was part of the US forces that liberated Auschwitz. It was not a misquote or typo on behalf of the reporter.
Which of the 60 states did his uncle live in, when he retreated to the attic for six months?

As an intelligent man, Barry should investigate the veracity such “family stories” before he spouts them to the public. If he wants to share these tales at a family gathering, so be it. At family reunions, I - and I guess most people - have repeated family lore that could not be verified by any reputable historical methods, but I would not dream of passing these stories on to the public.
What makes Barry's actions more reprehensible, is that he used these tales as a method to assure Jewish voters that he shares their concerns. He may have lied about something as deadly serious as mass murder, as if his grandfather's (alleged) experience gave the Illinois senator any license to pander to an ethnic group who suffered one of the most horrific crimes in history.
Why does this sort of action seem so common among Democrats? Lyndon Johnson was notorious for claiming that he won his Silver Star for being under fire in WWII. John Kerry's war record was proven to be a tissue of lies. and we all remember Hillary's war story. Yet as bad as was Hillary offering the story that her airplane landed under fire in Bosnia, Obama’s actions are far worse and are a little more proof that the Democratic Party has lost the connection between truth and falsehood, between reality and imagination.
