In Los Angeles, 60 hospitals have closed their emergency rooms over the past decade

60 hospitals......in Los Angeles? Sheesh, how many hospitals do they need?

FWIW, Dick Morris said that Barak Obama would have to ration health care to America's elderly to provide care to the 10-12 million illegal aliens in this country if Obama's socialized health care scam becomes law.

Morris said that that is the issue that would allow McCain to defeat Obama in November.

Krikorian's new argument is that while today's immigrants may be like earlier ones, the America they come to is so very different that our previous experience with immigrants is practically irrelevant.

Absolutely true,

As Americans are pinched between falling real estate values and the inflation of necessities such as gasoline, they are entitled to know how their tax dollars are being spent.

No. Americans have ALWAYS been tentitled to know how their tax dollars are spent.

We need a spreadsheet out there somewhere that LISTS what is being sent WHERE. Yes, I occasionally live in a fantasy world. < /s >

“how many hospitals do they need?”

With a Los Angeles county population of almost ten million and numerous illegal aliens showing up at emergency rooms every day looking for nonemergency medical care and for free, we need all the hospitals we can get.

To be honest, I flew over LA yesterday for the first time, and that city is HUGE, at least land area wise, and seems pretty densely populated. They have nearly 4 million people in that city.

That 60 hospitals have closed their ER’s does not sound outrageous to me. I live in Massachusetts, not an area with an illegal population that compares to Texas, Arizona or California, and an ER in a small community hospital I went into recently was 1/3 full, and all were hispanic in origin. That was one hospital on one day.

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (now called TANF,

Most likely that should be PANF, Permanent Assistance to Needy Families?

I want not only a spreadsheet of where the taxes go, but a check list on our tax forms: “I will support ...” and then YOU get to check where YOUR taxes go. Boy, would that stop the skullduggery in DC.

Talk about living in a fantasy world.

4 million? You are off by 10 to 15 million. It is one of the biggest cities in the world.

This is an aspect of the illegal alien debate that very few have covered.

He [Milton Friedman] said, "It's just obvious that you can't have free immigration and a welfare state."

“60 hospitals......in Los Angeles? Sheesh, how many hospitals do they need?”

and before I leave, there weren’t “60 hospitals closed” but 60 hospitals closed their “emergency rooms” and the reason is that hospitals not only in L.A. but hospitals across America are closing their emergency rooms because they can no longer afford to give FREE medical care. I don’t need to remind you that Federal law demands that hospitals MUST care for EVERYONE who shows up at the emergency room looking for medical care, whether it be an emergency or not and whether those seeking medical care are able to pay for such care or not.

> The Social Security retirement system was established only in 1935. Most other agencies that redistribute cash and costly benefits from taxpayers to non-taxpayers started with Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society in the late 1960s.

Sorry Phyllis, the welfare state started with the end of the Civil War. As freed slaves suddenly had to depend upon themselves for everything, the government set up the Freedmen’s Bureau to provide them with food, clothing, shelter and a stipend to see them through to their first paying jobs and migration North. Unfortunately, like all things of socialism, this promoted dependence upon the handouts. When the Yellow Influenza came home from WW1, many non-black families were devastated by loss of their breadwinners and the only successful system in place was the Freedmen’s Bureau. The stigma of going to this one and only welfare agency could not be overcome until it was renamed the Welfare Department.

The essential difference between the two waves of immigrants was best summed up by the Nobel Prize-winning advocate of a free market, Milton Friedman. He said, "It's just obvious that you can't have free immigration and a welfare state."

What is obvious is that the welfare state is destroying America gradually, with or without free immigration, or any immigration.

The Heritage Foundation estimated that in order to reduce government payments to the average low-skill household to a level equal to the taxes it pays, "it would be necessary to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, all means-tested welfare, and to cut expenditures on public education roughly in half." Obviously, that is not going to happen.

It is going to happen, whether we like it or not. If it doesn't first happen in another way, it will happen because of the collapse of our economy.
