NEW YORK Even as Hillary Clinton worked to defuse her Friday comment about the 2008 campaign and the Robert Kennedy assassination, a Fox New contributor went much further, joking about someone actually targeting Barack Obama.
Appearing on Fox News today, Liz Trotta, a former editor with the Washington Times and reporter the Chicago Tribune and Newsday, was asked by the host, Eric Shawn, about the Clinton controversy and the 2008 race. This led Trotta to refer to the Clinton misstep, in which she mentioned the RFK killing to show (the candidate later claimed) that previous campaigns, like the current one, went into June.
Trotta, according to video, replied, "And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, uh Obama. Well, both, if we could." She laughed.
The host, Shawn, clearly understanding how far she had gone, quickly commented: "Talk about how you really feel."
Then he continued: "But do you really think that--she didn't mean that she thinks that he going to get assassinated, and she apologized--
Trotta: "Well, that's beside the point, whether she meant it or not."
Shawn: "And she's just using it in a historical context?"
Trotta: "She's tone deaf, because it's a radioactive word. And the whole question of the first black man becoming a candidate for presidency of the United States has all kinds of overtones and all kinds of caveats that really have to be considered in this thing. And his security has been a real issue. He's had bodyguards earlier than anybody else. Surely this woman had to know that that was a third rail to say 'assassination.' And it's hard to argue for her on this, because it isn't the first time she's made this step."
Wait... didn’t some lefty nutjobs make a “fictional documentary” on President Bush getting assasinated, that was lauded by those elitist liberal artsy snobs?
I don't want the man to be President. But neither do I want him getting shot at, even "in fun".
It got some initial attention and notoriety, but nobody gives a flying fig now -- it's faded rapidly into the obscurity it so deserves.
No paintball battles in Rose Garden?
I don’t know about that one. But this one is beyond the pale, IMO.
Here is the shorter version.

It is going viral at youtube.
In 3 hours, it has almost 2400 comments and 230,000 views.
I hear ya.
I loved that Hillary made a gaffe... but this one never tickled my funny bone.
Some things just shouldn’t be joked about, IMO.
It’s all Shrillary’s fault!!
I don’t think anyone should make any cracks about assassinations of US politicians, period. OF course, I didn’t see any objections from the left when there was not merely a “joke” but an entire movie made with the theme of assassinating President George W. Bush..... THAT was just fine with all of the political left, but now they will go into meltdown mode for one foolish little remark on Fox News.
Wow, this is stupid, now that this clip exists it will allow all of the left to go crazy attacking Fox News and focusing their ire there. Thanks, Liz Trotta, whoever you are, you’ve just given the left the perfect means to “change the subject” or rather change the target of their rage.
Foot in mouth disease must be going around LOL!
I for one wish I had the opportunity to remind them of that. I don’t think assassination jokes about Obama (and I despise him) are cute, and I didn’t think that a whole movie devoted to the idea of Presdeint Bush being killed was funny either. the difference is, the Left is on a high horse of outrage about a few sentences re:Obama, but they ate it up when a whole movie forwarded the idea of a sitting President being killed. I wish I could throw that in their faces, though they’d do like they always do and either ignore it or make some hypocritical distinction.
Gods be kind, we will not have to deal with President Obama. As my handle suggests, I live amongst the scuffling class. Down here, the fear of assassination is very real.
Hillary’s “mispoke” aside, I was at my grandparents lake cottage when the Calfornia vote was being declared, had my young political junkie butt not been there we’d have been fishing...well anyway there we were. Grandma had no sooner said, flippantly, “Well maybe sombody will shoot the SOB”, than it happened.
She passed away at age 96, I think until that day she felt a little guilty for RFK’s death. Talk about my tagline being appropriate...
I lost track of how many jokes public figures made about assassinating Pres. Bush as well as a few suggestions that weren’t jokes. How many were ever condemned? I mean loudly and clearly condemned in the press by people of consequence? None that I remember. This atmosphere is what comes when there are no consequences for actions.
Four US presidents have been assassinated, one Democrat, Kennedy, and three Republicans, Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley.
Keep that in mind when Dems and liberals talk about this and try to point fingers.
Politically, it was just dumb for Hillary to say what she said. The entire matter would have been over if she had followed it with a genuine apology, “I was tired and I said something really stupid.” But the arrogance of her campaign won’t let her deal honestly with the issue. The Fox news gaffe is merely an extension of the tension and awkwardness of putting everything under a microscope when a person misspeaks. Regardless, what you think about Obama there is no doubt that the entire matter has allowed him to appear “very cool” as he defends Hillary saying he believes it was simply a matter of “campaign fatigue” on her part.
Whew! It wasn’t one of the good looking fox babes. Ok, fire her. /sarc
Well, that issue is difference....it’s like the difference between black and white.
I really do not see the big deal about the comment this woman made.
For example, what if Keith Olbermann on MSNBC were to make a joke about the assassination of President Bush? I am sure that most conservatives would understand it just to be a joke also.
I also wonder if this is some sort of signal the Bilderbergers are sending in this election. I don't know how Obama could be in that group or would automatically be put in that "club" by becoming president.
I am less worried about John McCain in this vein -- he is third generation Navy with his father and grandfather being admirals. In the family history there are a number of MCCains that served in the US Army, and supposedly even one on George Washington's staff (an officer no less).
So jokes at this level sometimes are message, in my opinion. I could be wrong.
When President Ronald Reagan joked: "We start bombing in 5 minutes. Ha. Ha" -- there was a reason. There may have been a leak (press) close to the president, so the joke may have been able to ferret out the leak. And, at the same time, it sent a message to the Communists...
Not hot. Guilty!
