A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day May 26,08 Memorial Day Military Tribute
Billie, The Mayor

Posted on 05/25/2008 7:09:29 PM PDT by The Mayor

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I have been including them here as I receive enough to make another collage.
I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
We have featured different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
Every Monday we post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day!

Thank you, Dita, for the link! Yes I get angry every time I hear it called the Korean Conflict! My husband was in the Navy during the Korean War. He didn’t go to Korea, but was readied many times. He was ready to do what his country asked him to do. God Rest His Soul this day! I miss him on these days. Well, I miss him on other days but on these teary days, it brings back lots of memories of our service days!

Bless you, dear Dita!

Although it was against Japanese regulations and could have meant death, these American POWs celebrate the 4th of July, 1942, in the Japanese prison camp of Casisange in the Philippines. Overall, an estimated 40 percent of U.S. Army and Air Force POWs died while in Japanese captivity, compared to 1.2 percent in German and Italian custody.

I’m sure you do miss him, (((Jaycee))).

Thankfully, there is now a Korean War Memorial for those surviving veterans to visit.

Korea looked to be a very harsh environment for our troops, God bless them every one.

Yes, it is wonderful they have the Korean War Memorial. I would love to see it in person but probably won’t but I enjoy the pictures that are posted with it. I believe Conor posts something like that, if I remember correctly.

You know, I was just thinking. People don’t know how sad the Korean was was on many of our younger people. We were in high school and our boys were getting drafted and a lot of them joined up to get the branch of service they wanted. It was so sad seeing our friends leave school and go off to war.

Young people (some of them) cannot imagine having to do such a thing. So many of them wouldn’t fight for their country. Thats why they’re in love with Obama. Obama’s pastor blasted the United States for bombing Iwo Jima, Nagasoki (sp.)he blasted all wars and acted as though we bombed the twin towers. And all the young people adore Obama and he learned this war stuff from his pastor. (Of course, he never heard anything the pastor said.) Excuse me for getting too talkative...can’t help it!

‘I Want to Go Home ... Especially on Memorial Day’
Day of Remembrance Just Another Day on the Job for U.S. Troops in Iraq
By NICK SCHIFRIN

BAGHDAD, May 26, 2008—

At Combat Outpost 881 in southwest Baghdad, every day is a sort of Memorial Day.

“One of my best friends got killed here in 2005,” Sgt. Robert Scott told ABC News from his small bedroom. “Several friends got killed, actually. I think about them every day.”

“One of my really close friends, Spc. Tucker, he was a good friend of mine,” Pvt. Matthew Brown told ABC News, sitting in the outpost’s mess hall. “I got the news about him, and that was really hard. But you know, I’m just trying to live my life the way he would and not think about how he went out. I think about how he lived.”

On this day, just like any other day, these twenty-somethings who fight for the U.S. Army in Baghdad remembered their friends, their colleagues, the men who they fight, eat and sleep next to.

But it is not a holiday for the more than 150,000 troops stationed in Iraq. Today was just another work day — a day during which the Raider Brigade of the 1st Battalion of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, which is based at 881, did what it does every day: went on a foot patrol.

My husband had just graduated from college and we had been married for almost 2 years when he went to OCS. The war reports are vivid in my mind..
