Many thanks to the mods for leaving this in Breaking News.

That's called 'speaking too soon'.

One of the mods really doesn't like tornado threads.

Looks real bad for Parkersburg. Here is a weather.com video about the Siege of Tornadoes that occurred from Thursday to Saturday. Obviously it later continued into a wider outbreak on Sunday.

I can hear the thunder moving this way. A tornado has been sited about 20 miles West of here near Delta. Also spotters have identified funnel clouds near Victor on I 80.

I’ve been watching cable and fooling around on the net all day. If I hadn’t come back to FR, I would never have known there was a weather issue.

What terrible news about Parkersburg! I think I’m a little south of all the mess (Iowa City), but will stay up a bit longer to make sure.

As always, FR tells me everything I need to know.

There is nothing left of Parkersburg in that neighborhood. All gone.

Grandma, you need to get ready to get underground. These are F4s and 5s that are wiping out entire towns, 1/2 to a mile wide, and hour plus tracks on the ground.

Tornados AND Flash Floods. Dang. Do ya go down in the cellar or up on the roof? Prayers for your safety and everyone out there affected by this weather.

” can hear the thunder moving this way.”

I think that means head for the cellar. Probably sooner rather than later. Hang out with the radio and/or laptop and wait for it to pass. Growing up they always told us to head for the one of the corners in the south end of the basement. Southwest I think? Had something to do with how the winds rotate so you wouldn’t end up with the whole house on top of you I think.

Good luck tonight.

I’m hearing the death toll in Parkersburg is going to be in the neighborhood of 17, if my source is reliable.

Damage video and what I’ve heard indicate to me that it’s likely this will be rated an EF5.

Yeah, it was on the ground for about 100 miles, from what I’ve heard. I don’t think it will break any records, but it’s up there. The record for the widest tornado is about 2.5 miles, and the longest track was the tri-state tornado, but this one might have been in the top five or so.

I’m hearing the death toll will rise in Parkersburg to something closer to 20, unfortunately. From what I’m seeing and hearing about damage (and without having any engineering training), I think it’s likely that this will indeed be rated an EF5 tornado. It destroyed the high school in Parkersburg, and something like 200 houses were destroyed, most of them well-built.

It also did some damage in the town of Hazleton that looked like F5 to me, although it’s hard to say what the construction was like for those buildings. But there it didn’t even leave any debris; it was all just gone.

Paper debris from Parkersburg was reported falling out of the sky in Wisconsin, over 100 miles away.

This thing tracked a whopping 5 or so miles north of me, 10 miles at the most. If it had tracked just three or four miles south it would have come right through a metro area of 120,000 people - and it almost did; it was starting to make a right turn but then sort of veered around the north edge of town.

So as bad as it was, especially in Parkersburg, it could have been even worse; if it had come through urban areas of Waterloo and Cedar Falls it could have killed hundreds.

I have not heard from her so I know she's safe. She was prepared to stop because both her husband and I warned her that it was not realistic to expect to be able to get clear home as she had to go through the Ames/Des Moines area and then turn west on I 80 and it was bad all along that area.

Are you ok? Nothing major happened here but it was close. They're forecasting more rain for today.

Parkersburg took a severe direct hit.

Thank you for your bravery in chasing these things. I live in northern Alabama and have developed a “tornado phobia” cause of all the ones we have here. I've had several near misses over the years and have been close enough to hear the “train”. Even though I last heard that sound in the mid 90’s I flashback to it every time we come under a watch or a warning.

The weather spotters in my area are great as are the local weathermen.

We are okay. There is some hail damage to the new corn which was just emerging. Some may need to be replanted. There are tree branches down, flower beds flattened. Just STUFF.

The nearest tornado was about 20 miles from here. The knats are horrible outside this morning.

Please let me know as soon as you hear from your daughter.
