New York Governor Pardons Rapper/Attempted Murderer Slick Rick

New York Governor Pardons Slick Rick May 23, 2008, 3:35 PM ET Hillary Crosley, N.Y.

Veteran rapper Ricky "Slick Rick" Walters received a full and unconditional pardon from New York governor David Paterson today (May 23) for the attempted murders of two men in 1991, apparently ending a long legal sega.

Walters has already served approximately five years in prison and was released in 1997 on parole and discharged in 2000. But he faces deportation under a federal statute mandating the removal of a lawful resident alien upon conviction of an aggravated felony or a weapon offense.

In 1995, an immigration judge ended Walters' deportment proceedings but the decision was later overturned by the Board of Immigration Appeals. Walters can still be deported despite Paterson's pardon, which is expected to slow efforts to return him to the United Kingdom, the country he left at age 11.

"My family and I are eternally thankful to Governor Paterson, my attorneys and all of the people who have supported me throughout the past 17 years," says Walters. "This has been a long and difficult road and I am happy for this to be settled once and for all. I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and to continue leading an honest and productive life."

Paterson said in a statement that Walters is now an artist and landlord in New York who has not had any criminal problems since his release from prison. Walters has also volunteered to counsel youths against violence.

Walters is best known for albums like "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" and songs like "La-Di-Da-Di" and "The Art of Storytelling," which have influenced artists such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and OutKast.

“Slick Rick was indicted on 2 counts of attempted murder and pled guilty to all charges which also included, assault, use of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon. Russell Simmons, head of Def Jam records, bailed him out,,,”

Russell Simmons loves Slick rick, but not Russell’s wife. What do Russell and Easy-E have in common?

Certainly this was done to correct an injustice done to an innocent man and not simply a stunt to pander to a voting demographic.

New York Governor David Paterson is “president” Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama (PBUH) writ small. Look for slavery reparations, massive new affirmative action programs, socialistic health care, tax hikes, millions of ethnics pardoned & released from prison to prey on innocents, “co-president” Michelle Obama, a weakened military, retreat from Iraq and the rest of the War on Terror, etc...

Why don’t you New Yorkers pardon the Gove right out of office?

A specific attempt to subvert Federal immigration laws by this clown. The INS should proceed with the deportation and let the attempted murderer appeal from his homeland.

Agreed. No NY politician would *ever* stoop to pandering. That's a long established fact.

About three quarters of the hip-hop booty hos in NYC, I imagine.

We need to put this into proper perspective. This puke of a governor is doing everything he can to further restrict the access and possession of firearms to all innocent adults in New York. At the same time is is rewarding this gangster for trying to kill two people using a firearm!!!!!
And they say crime doesn't pay. It seems to be paying this governor just fine. I wonder how much money changed hands for this to happen??? It's got to take a lot of money to cause this level of hypocrisy!!

I wasn’t shocked when Slick Rick committed these crimes, but I was saddened. He actually was, and maybe still is, extremely talented.

He had many rhymes which one could truly call poetic, and he was excellent at using rhyme as a means of storytelling. The problem is he actually lived the life he often wrote about.

I just don’t see how you justify pardoning a man who pleaded guilty.
