High-court fears drive conservatives to rally around McCain, overlook flaws
The Washington Times ^ | 5-21-08 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Prominent conservatives and activists are indicating they will put aside their differences with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain and rally their supporters to his side because of one issue: federal judgeships.

In big gatherings and small, in e-mails and one-on-one conversations, conservative opinion leaders fear a Democratic president, especially Sen. Barack Obama, will use the presidential power to appoint federal judges who will remove references to God and religious symbols from public places.

They predict the incoming president likely will fill more vacancies on the federal bench over the next four years than at any time in recent memory, giving a Democratic administration the power to shape the courts to reflect a liberal worldview.

The American Civil Liberties Union "has been on a national rampage to remove God from every public place: the Pledge of Allegiance, the Ten Commandments, plaques in courthouses, the Boys Scouts when they meet on public property," said Phyllis Schlafly, head of the Eagle Forum, a pro-family group that held a private meeting for conservatives yesterday in a Washington hotel.

"These subjects should get out on the table so people understand what's going on in the courts," she said.

Peter J. Ferrara, general counsel to the conservative legal rights group American Civil Rights Union, said, "McCain said he'd appoint people like [Supreme Court Chief Justice John] Roberts and [Justice Samuel] Alito. Obama is saying he'd name people like [Justices Ruth Bader] Ginsberg and [David] Souter."

Conservatives consider the latter pair to be the two most consistently liberal Supreme Court justices.

"Obama is swimming in a sea of left-wing extremism with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright [Mr. Obama's former pastor] and [violent radical activist and Obama acquaintance] Bill Ayers and the rest of them," said Mr. Ferrara, a former Reagan White House aide.

Sure we do, because having the alternative is even moving further from our conservative principals. Moving so far from them in fact that we will ensure that our country is not taken control of by someone who would take it so far from our principals.

Don’t worry, real Conservaties will step up to the plate and do the dirty work to ensure that Obama is not your next president.

I agree provided they don't vote for either of the other two socialists.

Ummmmmmm excuse me, but it is you that thinks holding on to your principals and having someone like BHO get elected as this nation’s leader will make this nation turn more conservative. You fail to even consider that he may be so damaging that this country no longer exists as we know it and yet you stand there and spew forth nonsense about liberal vs. conservative. That somehow if we vote for McCain we are not conservative. The reality is we are conservative with no one to vote for so we must vote for whom we believe to be the least damaging to our great nation. For this conservative that is McCain.

Standing by my conservative principles will not contribute to Obama or any other socialist becoming President because I won't be voting for any of the three socialist candidates.

You fail to even consider that he may be so damaging that this country no longer exists as we know it and yet you stand there and spew forth nonsense about liberal vs. conservative.

I would only be failing if I followed the same lemming to the sea attitude that voting for a socialist like McCain will actually stop socialism knowing based on history socialists never cede their principles. For some inexplicable reason the GOP always demands conservative sacrifice their beliefs but never make the same demand of the socialist!

The reality is we are conservative with no one to vote for so we must vote for whom we believe to be the least damaging to our great nation.

The reality is this is the same loser strategy the GOP has been using for decades with the only result incremental damage by socialist after each election. The GOP never has a plan to draw a line and the sand and standing firm on conservative principles. The result is a slippery slope towards socialism. You can go down that path but not me.

For this conservative that is McCain.

Once again you mistakenly confuse McCain with conservatism. Does a conservative actively seek out the socialists Democrats to become a member of their party as McCain did in 2001? Does a socialist like John Kerry consider a conservative as a VP running mate as he did with McCain? Would communist billionaire Geroge Soros fund a conservative as the former has done with the latter? Would a conservative sponsor bills with socialists Lieberman, Feingold and Kennedy regarding the fallacy of human induced global warming, limiting free speech and granting amnesty for illegal aliens that will threaten our national security? Would a conservative promise to speak to amnesty loving La Raza? Would a conservative not commit to ending sanctuary cities? Would a conservative promise not to drill in ANWR that would make our country more self sufficient for energy?

McCain supports all these positions as do the socialist Democrats.

I don’t answer questions posed in the manner of “When did you stop beating your wife?”

Are you too stupid to understand that?

You started it by throwing around words like “cult.” I personally probably agree with you on Huckaloser but you do not get to brand all of the Baptists as cultists because of that one jacka$$. Perhaps you are a mormon still sore over the treatment that Mitt received in the primaries. If so, get over it.

Perhaps I am a former baptist sick over the treatment I and my family received at the hands of baptists.

“I would rather see RINOs fight a democRAT President than fawn all over a RINO President.”

Any politician that would attempt to railroad an amnesty bill in the dead of night and without debate is downright evil. He’s a man that cannot be trusted at all.

That told me all I needed to know about that SOB.

It absolutely will, and it will contribute to Obama being the socialist at best, and who knows what at worse, being elected because a conservative is taking a vote away from the most conservative candidate - McCain. The candidate that can lead the brave men and women of the armed services the best - McCain. With all of his faults McCain still is the most conservative of the viable candidates we have to choose from.

No one gave McCain any chance at all of capturing the nomination. I still am not sure how he did it myself. As a voter who loves my country I now must assess the candidates in the field. I can automatically throw out all of the independents since there has never been one elected in the history of this country. That leaves me, and unfortunately you, with the democrat Obama or the republican McCain as the only viable candidates who will be this country's next President. Between the two the best I can do for my military and my country is McCain. Unfortunately the best you can do is vote for McCain. The worst thing you can do for the military and our country is to vote for an independent or not vote at all. Like I said that will be a vote for Obama because it is not a vote for McCain. Believe me it was very hard for me to come to that realization until I started hearing about Obama's irreverent Wright and his country hating wife. It was then that I realized I must do what I must do to make sure that Obama is not elected as our President. That means voting for John McCain and acting like I am a cheerleader when I know that McCain is at best a 4 year stop gap measure. I am praying that he will surprise me and be more conservative then I can imagine. Praying anymore seems to be the conservatives only real hope.

The reality is this is the same loser strategy the GOP has been using for decades with the only result incremental damage by socialist after each election. The GOP never has a plan to draw a line and the sand and standing firm on conservative principles. The result is a slippery slope towards socialism. You can go down that path but not me.

Socialists are beiung turned out by the tens of thousands every day in our schools from k-4 years of college. That is why the Republicans have been forced to more to the center, otherwise, Republicans will never win an election. Conservatives lost the battle a long time ago by losing our schools to socialists, getting back to conservatism will take a long time if it will ever be possible. I have been sounding the alarm for many years about htis but no one seemed too conscerned.

Once again you mistakenly confuse McCain with conservatism.

Absolutely not, but McCain is the most conservative viable candidate running for the Presidency. But you mistake that your pride and your principals can be kept intact and not face the reality of the consequences, and that the next go round you will somehow get a more conservative President. Reagan only got elected the first time because he was lucky, not because he was the more conservative candidate. He was lucky that he was running against Carter. I think I could have probably beaten Carter. His second term was because he was a great man with great ideas that led this nation out of its maliase and economic downward spiral. In voting for McCain you must also help him get a more conservative Congress and Senate to keep McCain more conservative by giving him more conservative legislation.

Does a conservative actively seek out the socialists Democrats to become a member of their party as McCain did in 2001? Does a socialist like John Kerry consider a conservative as a VP running mate as he did with McCain?

Nope, and according to McCain he never sought them out and he never considered Kerry's offer, which is why Kerry never offered.

Would communist billionaire Geroge Soros fund a conservative as the former has done with the latter?

As the old saying goes, politics makes for strange bedfellows. My take on this, and again I use a lot of prayer, that McCain is a political whore who will take funding from whomever he can get it. I believe that Soros and Kerry gave monies to McCain's Reform Foundation which helped pay campaign operatives between elections, as fundraising is difficult during "off" years. My prayers are that George Soros will be deeply disapointed and that I and my fellow conservatives will be pleasntly surprised and relieved.

Thes are all troubling items with McCain for sure, let's not forget his statements to close Gitmo too. The problem is with the democrat Obama you get these along with a whole slew of other disturbing items. To name jst a few The wrong Reverend Wright, his wife who hates her country as first lady, the most liberal Senator coupled with a liberal Congress and Senate. These are reasons that we must couple our bids for McCain as President with sending him more conservative Congressmen/women and Senators.

I guess I can sum this up by saying that I am relying more on God and my prayers than I am on McCain. If God disappoints me then I will know he has a good reason for this, but prayers are the best I have to work with this election. In my book prayers are a great thing. I pray you will follow my lead. If not I will pray that God has mecy on America though I sometimes wonder why he would. Then I look around and realize that we are still one of the greatest countries that has ever existed and realize he still is on our side.

It's what JS said to EMMA after THIS:

Eliza was a devout Mormon. At age 38, she became Joseph Smith's 14th plural wife (in addition to Smith's lawful wife, Emma). In 1842, after learning Eliza was pregnant, Emma Smith beat Eliza with a broomstick and knocked her down a flight of stairs, causing Eliza to miscarry Smith's baby.

So far, I haven’t met anyone, Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, who is enthusiastic about either candidate. Most of the people I know say they’ll either hold their noses or stay home.
