The United Nations will send nearly a quarter of a million condoms into cyclone-hit Myanmar to help needy survivors with no access to contraceptives, a UN official says.
So far, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said it had sent 72 800 condoms to survivors struggling to maintain their family planning after the storm hit in early May.
A total of 218 400 condoms would be delivered, UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont said.
"We don't want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don't have access to condoms and contraceptives," said Chaiyos.
Flights were also carrying reproductive health kits, which included razors for cutting umbilical cords, clean sheets for delivering babies and enough contraceptive pills and injections to last 3 390 women three months.
The supplies were meant to serve about 300 000 people, Chaiyos said.
Cyclone Nargis left 2.4 million people in desperate need of food, medicine and shelter, the UN estimated, but Chaiyos said not all of the affected people would need family planning supplies.
"Not every single woman is using contraceptives in Myanmar. We're basing this on regular habits," he said.
Cyclone Nargis left at least 133 000 people dead and missing, and aid groups had complained that supplies were not getting to survivors quickly enough because of limitations imposed by the ruling junta.
Can they eat them?
You know you’re really screwed...when the U.N. starts sending you condoms...instead of food.
Leave it to the UN, to send condoms to starving people facing a disease outbreak. I guess there’s a certain Malthusian logic to such vileness, if you’re wanting to reduce world population.
You can store foods in them to keep them from spoiling.
I’m sure that’s what the UN is concerned about.
PHFFFFT!
It is for the raping junta to use as they march across the victims and their animals.
I’m as randy as the next guy, but if I were in the middle of a disaster, sex would be the LAST thing on my mind.
Maybe the victims can blow them up like balloons and use them as flotation devices?
This has to be April 1st. This is a joke.
I wish this country would pay it’s UN dues and all other obligations to the UN in condoms.
Wow. Now that’s offensive on so many levels!
The Left must really think highly of these people. Not! I mean, they’re just savages, right? No concept that their homes and villages are gone; their lives have been changed forever. No time to mourn the loss of their many loved ones; I’d wager to bet that most families lost either the husband or the wife in the mix. And if it was the children that were lost, why prevent the couples from starting over and re-populating their country?
But it’s just business as usual, right? People gotta have SEX, no matter what the circumstances.
What a load.
We can all rest easy, The UN is on the case!
A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that.
It is quintessential bureaucracy - it's what the UN Population Fund does, they have the budget and it is earmarked for contraceptives, and they cannot simply reprogram that money into what is really needed. Nor can they do nothing because that would look really bad on the report. So they are doing the one thing they can, sending in the balloons, however stupid that might sound.
They lost many people, right? sounds like they need to add some bodies to their nation. Unless “immigration” is always the answer.
What? No Viagra?...............
They might want to treat themselves since they're under stress.
Didn't michaeljackson want to send some third world nation some carnival rides at one time?
Is Teresa Heinz in charge of this?
Yea, that’s what they need.
The UN probably doesn’t want their staffers getting an STD when they start their sexual abuse campaign that they’ve brought to so many countries NEEDING aid.
