Forget talk of a recession - a new $175 burger has set the city's gold standard for conspicuous consumption.
Literally.
The Richard Nouveau - from the Wall Street Burger Shoppe, natch - comes topped with a blizzard of real gold flakes, plus 25 grams of black truffles, a seared slab of foie gras and an aged Gruyere typically reserved for a high-class cheese tray.

“thats gold leaf sprinkled on top. How weird.”
Probably $2 worth of gold-colored confetti purchased at Hobby Lobby or Michaels... ;)

A note on wealthy liberal people.
It seems that many of them heed the old saying- "You can't take it with you". They seem to try to waste, utterly and completely, good old fashioned money. The old fashioned conservative, while pretty greedy, would at least try to spin some money off to a good cause.
One could go to certain modern art. Millions spent on a piece of junk. Easy come, easy go.
So it goes.

What you say is true; it really is amazing how much money there is in Manhattan.
Nonetheless, putting gold on a hamburger does strike my New England-influenced sensibilities as excessive. Kobe beef, aged Gruyere, and truffles I can see, but gold?

Conservatives are an inherently frugal bunch. I don’t see an issue with the price as much as the value.
Speaking strictly for myself, if I’m paying that much for a burger, it better be delivered hot & tasty by a naked cowgirl at the snap of a finger.

I would wonder if it is healthy to eat gold.

I’m not sure what your body would use it for. It’s relatively inert, the main reason for it’s value, so I guess small flakes wouldn’t hurt you too bad. Probably wouldn’t taste too good picking it out of your teeth after the burger though. :)

It’s probably real gold leaf flakes. Gold can be made into incredibly thin flakes. I have several envelopes of the stuff I bought on eBay. It’s real gold, but the total weight is maybe a gram or two. I’m thinking of a gold flake pulled pork BBQ sandwich, with slaw. Now that’s haute cuisine.

I spent $3.24 today for lunch at Mickey D’s today... 2 double cheeseburgers and a $1, 42oz iced tea.
I’m a cheapskate.

Hahahahaa ... I was gonna go in that direction, but thought the better of it due to this being a 'family forum' and with the Mod's being especially antsy today due to the Ted K thing ....
Hey, it's in the other direction and nobody was saying anything about the carcinogenic effects of having S for brains.

On a related note, my aunt and uncle saw Ted K looking rather glum sitting in a wheelchair at Mayo's in Rochester, MN a month and a half ago. I bet he knew even then about his condition.
