A court order banning someone from church? What was that thing about prohibiting free exercise of religion?

You don’t get the rest of the story until almost at the end.

Adam, who is more than 6 feet tall and weighs over 225 pounds, spits and urinates in church and has nearly injured children and elderly people.

The forces of tolerance might say that such a person should not be banned from attending. Since when are tolerance and inclusion the only considerations?

The Rev. Daniel Walz, who did not return calls left at the Church of St. Joseph parish office, wrote in court documents that Adam's behavior was "extremely disruptive and dangerous." He alleged that Adam, who is more than 6 feet tall and weighs over 225 pounds, spits and urinates in church and has nearly injured children and elderly people.

I feel bad for the mother but I think I have about all the "education and understanding about autism" I need for this situation.

The simple solution is for the pastor to bring communion to the child.

Looks to me like the mother has failed in her job to teach her son manners and discipline. Now she has an overgrown, out of control monster on her hands. The kid needs help. The parishioners should not be expected to endure this behavior.

Having a high functioning autistic young man in the family I have some sympathy for this mother; but my own experience has taught me that I cannot expect the world to ignore or excuse disruptive BEHAVIORS even if they are caused by autism. One of the downsides of the education system's emphasis on inclusion (IDEA, etc) is that parents begin to expect that the business world, the law enforcement world...in short, every other aspect of life must be as accomodating as what they encounter with schools. It just isn't so; nor, in cases like this where disruptive behaviors put others at risk, should it ever be so.

I was with the mom until I read this in the story:
The Rev. Daniel Walz ... alleged that Adam, who is more than 6 feet tall and weighs over 225 pounds, spits and urinates in church and has nearly injured children and elderly people.
Mom, no matter how much you want for life to be normal for your son, it ain't gonna happen and you cannot demand that others live in a world with your color sky.

Oh, of course! All those people he spits at and urinates on are just going to have to UNDERSTAND, and sit there and take it. What’s next for this mother- bringing her dog into the church because the son likes being around him?

Oh my I think God has picked this church to show the truth of who God really is. Long suffering. Do you really think that compared to God any of our human behaviors are much removed from this young mans? Maybe we aren’t peeing in our pants or spitting at our neighbors but I would bet that we are some pretty sad creatures in comparison to a Holy Loving God. In our minds everyday we pizz and spit on our neighbors. Maybe we hide it better. We really have no vision for covering our sisters and brothers in the love of God. Bless this young man and his family and hopefully people will rise up and see the purpose of “church”.

Is it my imagination. Did autism show up about the same time the insane asylums were closed down about thirty years ago? I never heard of it before then.

The Twin Cities TV stations showed video of this family today. The boy is a giant, hulking 13-year-old who is not only tall, but over-weight.

One story I read in the newspaper says this boy hit a child in the congregation, and nearly knocked down some old people in a rush to exit the church at the end of Mass. The parish has been talking to the family since last summer about the problems this boy is making for the entire congregation, but the mother will not listen to their concerns. That is why a restraining order was issued. Now the mother is making a big fuss about it.

I wonder how the Mass went today in Browerville?

I attended Mass in Bertha a long time ago. Lots of old people.
I don’t care what church you belong to-——no one should be put in the position of possibly being spat or urinated on. This Mom should just grab a bottle of Holy Water and bless her son often. He doesn’t understand the Mass and is disruptive—leave him at home.

Perhaps some generous soul could offer to stay home with the boy so his mom and others can hear Mass in peace. It sounds like she does not get much of a break from him. His behavior cannot be tolerated, but sadly his family may be so used to it that they don’t notice or have forgotten what normal is. The mom says he likes the Mass’s consistency and order, the idea to let him watch it on tv might be a good solution.
