Dear ,
When I became People For the American Way's president two months ago, I was excited about the work we could do together. Today I am even more energized about what we are accomplishing and more enthusiastic about our potential. Let me tell you why with a few stories from the last couple of weeks.
When People For the American Way learned that John McCain was planning a major speech on judges, we knew it would be a great opportunity to get the word out on just how bad the federal judiciary has become under President Bush, and we went into action. A team of staff and activists were on the ground in North Carolina with flyers for speech attendees and a banner telling Sen. McCain, "We don't need more bad Bush judges." Our legal and communications team put together materials explaining what kind of damage has already been done by the Bush Supreme Court nominees that McCain was so proud to support. And we created a "translation guide" to the predictable rhetoric he used. Our response to the speech made it into the Washington Post, USA Today, The Nation, and papers across the country, and was picked up on many progressive blogs. We're working on new ways to use his speech to drive home what's at stake with the future of the Supreme Court.
People For the American Way Foundation answered the call to defend core constitutional values when we heard about Wendy Gonaver, a woman in California who lost a teaching job at Cal State over the "loyalty oath" she was required to sign. Wendy, a Quaker, was willing to sign as long as she could attach an explanation that she wasn't committing herself to take up arms in the Constitution's defense and to assert her belief that the oath undermined her free speech rights. Even though California's other major state university has a common-sense policy that respects employees' religious and free speech rights, Cal State refused and fired her. Intervening on Ms. Gonaver's behalf, People For the American Way Foundation has provided her with legal representation and called for her reinstatement, asked the university to adopt a policy similar to the University of California's, worked to bring significant media attention to her story, and mobilized grassroots support with a petition that has already garnered thousands of signatures. If you've signed, thanks! If not, you can do so here. I'll keep you posted on our progress.
As part of our Democracy Campaign, both People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation are working to protect the right to vote. In the past several days I have met with Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. John Conyers and coalition allies to talk about a national-level strategy on voting rights. Our quick reaction to the Supreme Court's recent decision upholding a terribly restrictive voter ID law in Indiana made CNN, the New York Times, and other major media. People For is leading a coalition strike force to counter new state-level efforts to erect barriers to voting. Members of People For the American Way Foundation's Young Elected Officials Network have played important roles in protecting voting rights in key states where voter ID legislation is moving.
There's so much more than I am able to cover in a brief note. I encourage you to visit our website for news on People For's Supreme Court campaign and for daily outrages and analysis from our Right Wing Watch blog. You should know that we're revamping our website over the summer -- as we head into the fall stretch we'll be better equipped to keep you informed and active on the things you care about most.
I'm planning to keep in touch with regular updates.
Best wishes,
Kathryn Kolbert
P.S. It was exhilarating to be gathered with the full staff when the California Supreme Court decision recognizing marriage equality was handed down. These are historic times, with historic opportunities for People For and the progressive movement. With your continued support we'll be able to take advantage of them.
This highlights how the Judiciary has become much better under George W Bush. He had to be drug a bit into giving us Sam Alito but can anyone, even the harshest Conservative critics say President Bush has not delivered two of the most consistently conservative judges of any President since Reagan? The challenge is getting the message out. John McCain will only give us conservative judges if conservatives support him and the election of a conservative Republican House and Senate. We should look at the goal as not just to get McCain elected but to make sure he is elected in an environment where Republicans have gained ground because of conservatives not lost it due to them.
Can this be done? I don’t know but when I think of my country and my children I think it is possible. The left is a horrible monster than must be slain at every chance. We can not hide in our castles because our knights are a bit rusty. We should learn a bit from the radical left. They don’t have the power they do over the Democrat party because they are great in numbers but because they control the message.
Which America? I think if you were to ask the PFAW president if she has a "model city", I bet she'd say "Amsterdam".
I believe they misspelled their organization’s name. It should be: People For the Amerikan Way.
Meaning, we don't get the laws created that we want from the bench.
Is it just me, or are all the liberals starting to look alike....you can pick them out of a crowd instantly.
The Supreme court and it’s right lean is the top priority for the Liberals this time around. I think this is why the Super Delegates are ignoring their position in making sure Obama doesn’t get the vote.
They need this chance to get the courts to lean their direction. And I think they are balancing out their ‘68 promises, or their desire to get someone votable in the running. It’s got to be tough on them.
Ruin the system that feeds the beast, or ruin the world in which we live. Tough choices.
I think it is (yet to be accomplished) the USSA.
Coming soon(er than we think) to a neighborhood, town, city, county, state and commonwealth, nation near you.
I wish I had your confidence. McQueeg seems like more of a David Souter than Sam Alito sort of guy. His pals in the cocktail circuit would stop talking to him if he nominated another Alito. He wouldn’t care if we got upset with him for picking a Souter.
Umm, perhaps you gave your email address to the RNC and they sold it? This day and age, I wouldn’t put anything past the RNC.
This profoundly ignorant women is as great an enemy of the United States of America as any who has ever worn a uniform and carried a gun. Read my column this week as an antidote to the drivel from PFAW.
Congressman Billybob
Bizarro World bump.
It's not just you. Most 'Rat women look like dikes and most 'Rat men look like metrosexual homos.
YECCHHHH! What is IT?
