Sen. Kennedy falls ill; taken to Boston hospital by helicopter

HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.

Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.

A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.

He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.

Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.

Massachusetts once produced patriots and free men - however times have changed, and in the modern era all too frequently Massachusetts has produced dishonorable, disreputable men and traitors.

I was a liberal before I lived in MA. A few years in MA would wipe away a lot of people's childish illusions. It really woke me up.

I would think the dumb Kennedy, the congressman, would move to Mass and take the throne.

Hun? Am I missing something? Last I knew his last name was still Romney? Did he suddenly switch his name to Kennedy when I was sleeping/

I just peeked and several are talking about the fact that most of our posts are wishing Sen Kennedy a full recovery and that freepers are not the monsters some people make them out to be.

Some are even saying offensive posters on their side are way worse than the ones on our side.

So some of them are open minded.... Who knew?

I can’t stand the man or his politics, but I would never wish him ill.

Exactly. I have seen prayers for recovery etc., no one deserves a stroke...my answer is "no one deserves to be abandoned in a submerged vehicle gasping for air while the perpetrator is seeking legal counseling."

I do not wish him well and I do not wish him ill, either. God is exacting his justice, whatever that means to Senator Kennedy. I certainly will not weep for the loss of his presence.

I was just thinking about him this morning, wondering how old he is. Prayers for his recovery and retirement from the Senate.

And the hypocrisy was mentioned by some on their threads.

In life, there are some to understand that during a life and death situation it is not right to revel in their misfortune. Apparently both Right and Left are sometimes similarly misguided.

During those DU threads many disparaged Republicans ... and many did, as we have, called them on how bad it was. So unfortunately, we are alike in that regard.

Well he had two seizures this morning- one that brought him to the ER and then one while enroute to MGH. As we know- seizures can be brought on by strokes.
