The Obama Campaign Goes Completely Insane
Commentary Magazine ^ | May 15, 2008 | John Podhoretz

If you look a few posts below, you will find the text of President Bush’s powerful and moving speech to the Knesset today. In the course of it, he says something very general:

Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

Bush here is arguing in very broad brush against a generally meliorist view of foreign policy — one, moreover, that is held by many people who work inside his own government. For some reason, people who work for the almost-certain nominee of the Democratic party have decided that Bush was attacking him. As Kate Phillips writes on the New York Times website:

In a telephone interview on CNN just a few minutes ago, Robert Gibbs, the communications director for Senator Barack Obama, called Mr. Bush’s remarks “astonishing” and an “unprecendented political attack on foreign soil.”

An “unprecedented attack on foreign soil”? That is completely deranged. Not only did Bush not mention Obama by name, it is doubtful he or his people were thinking about Obama. The argument that negotiating with terrorists is appeasement akin to Europe’s appeasement of Hitler is a standard view among hawks on the Right — decades old, dating back even before Barry Obama found the audacity to hope in the pews of Jeremiah Wright’s church. It is exactly the sort of thing a man with Bush’s politics would say in a speech before the Knesset, whether Obama had run for president or not.

The Obama campaign has even issued a statement on the matter in Obama’s name:

It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel’s independence to launch a false political attack. It is time to turn the page on eight years of policies that have strengthened Iran and failed to secure America or our ally Israel. Instead of tough talk and no action, we need to do what Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan did and use all elements of American power - including tough, principled, and direct diplomacy - to pressure countries like Iran and Syria. George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.

I’m not sure what this all says about Obama. Is this smart politics, getting his base riled up on his behalf? Is he trying to use Bush as a wedge to make the case to the Jewish community in the United States that the bad man in the White House is mischaracterizing him and therefore Jews should like him more? Is he trying, for the millionth time, to rule any criticism of himself out of reasonable bounds by complaining about something that isn’t even criticism of him?

Or is this just another example of Obama’s thin-skinned-ness?

Goes? Or just peeked back around the bend to see if America was following down that primrose path?

Considering how hard Obama and Pelosi squealed, I’d say that they are clearly guilty of being appeasers, and don’t like people noticing.

Obama needs a nap, he’s cranky from having visited all 57 states of the Union.

Since Bush was quoting a 1930’s Republican Senator (William Borah of Idaho), he obviously meant Obama.

I also straddled the Carter-Reagan eras. What a profound difference, almost immediately, in the Air Force. Morale blasted off where, before Reagan, it had become nearly invisible.

Fox News is out on our cable this morning (Time Warner claims it’s a missing channel problem...whatever), so I tuned into Morning Joe. I was screaming after 30 seconds...the Bush bashing was out of control, especially from our buddy Pat. Did I hear correctly that Barry will be giving a big speech today to address this issue? As Jackie Mason said—Barack Obama has no business running for president.

The ‘appeasement crowd’ operate under the self-delusion that terrorists and others with an unquenchable thirst for power over others are just misguided but basically good human beings who can be convinced by reason to live at peace with their enemies.

This is an erroneous picture of the terrorist. Terrorists represent the ultimate depths of human depravity and will not stop until they have either subjugated their targets or have been destroyed themselves. This was true of Hitler and the Nazis and is true of the Islamo-facists today. Ignore the truth at the peril of your life and those of your neighbors.

Very well stated.

I am going to add just a little to your statement. It is common to get into a situation where some petty dictator in your life does something they have “power” to do just to make your life miserable. Two quick examples: the school bus driver who intentionally keeps you stopped just because they can; the employee who complains that someone was smoking only 45 feet away from the building. I believe it is possible that a full majority of people crave power over other people. We could all give myriad examples of bureaucrats on power trips.

I love to use these situations as teaching moments for my liberal friends who have an “antiWar” bug. I have found it to be very effective, to point the situation out to them, and simply extrapolate: “How can you expect to have an absence of war in the world when there are so many little tin-horn dictators all around you? They will start the war and you have to deal with them.” It is most especially delicious when they themselves are the power offender - which has been the case often enough, and they are bragging to me about their exploits.

Since SnObama is so sensitive about his ears, it is well that he gives me cause to call him something other than ODumbo.

I wouldn’t want to offend him.

It is clear from San Francisco, that he’s proud of SnObama.

Makes me wonder if failing education students turn to journalism as a major.
-—<>-—<>-—<>-—<>-—<>-—

When I was in college, the major jocks loved, due to being easy, was journalism. I think in fact that journalism majors are either “world savers” or quite low intelligence. Yet another reason to distrust their reporting.

Gad’s, that Barry-rising-from-the-waves picture is obscene! What’s that he’s got in his hand - a remote?

LOL!

However, I looked at it more closely and decided that it’s either a book with the letter B on it, presumably the message given to Barry by the Deity himself and monogrammed to commemorate the occasion - or it’s a McDonald’s box on its side.

Sample reply for Bush--"Well, actually I was thinking of another presidential figure when I mentioned appeasement...but if the shoe fits, Obama, wear it."

Seems to me the Dems set themselves up for a snappy comeback, but of course we'll miss the ball.

Obama: "I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems, ....I will not weaponize space... I will slow development of future combat systems... I will institute a 'Defense Priorities Board' to ensure the quadrennial defense review is not used ..."

Then, there will be peace in our time without the evil republicans causing war!

My change is good for Muslims, Islamofascists, Black Racists, and Chrislims. $crew the Christians and real Jews!
