Dreams of My Arugula

by JohnHuang2

So, the final returns from West Virginia are in and Hillary has defeated the Prohibitive Favorite, The Runaway Front-runner by a teensy-weensy 41-point margin. Oh, no big deal — for the fall election, Obama’s written off West Virginia and Kentucky despite his vow to campaign in all 57 states. But, as they say, Obama has the nomination math on his side — recently underscored when he bagged another coveted superdelegate, Ahmed Yousef of Hamas.
Obama got crushed despite a week of ‘Clinton dismisses calls to drop out’, ‘Hillary enters death-with-dignity phase’, ‘Clinton should drop out’, ‘Hillary Clinton needs to know when to fold ‘em’, ‘Hillary Clinton failed to master the female approach’, ‘Stephanopoulos says Clinton should drop out’, ‘Clinton goes from inevitable nominee to on the ropes’, Hillary’s ‘Seeds of Destruction’, ‘Exit Clinton: With a snarl or a smile?’, ‘It’s (Almost) Over, and it’s Easy to See Why Hillary Lost’, ‘Obama rises from political obscurity to verge of history’. The History Verger couldn’t crack 27 percent tonight. (Maybe if he had gotten his chum William Ayers to bomb West Virginia . . .)
Democrats have settled on a candidate so far left, he shares all the “values” of Venezuela’s America-hater Hugo Chavez — the only difference between the two being that Obama was dumb enough to marry Sista Souljah.
The media seem deeply impressed by how Obama has shown he can connect with people, whether they live in Berkeley or San Francisco. His only problem being the rest of the country. Picking the weaker of the two Democrat candidates must be the party’s victory strategy. Except for his home state of Illinois, Obama got defeated in the big states and the battleground states. Since early March, he’s won fewer states than Hillary (though I’m leaving out Guam, since it’s not one of America’s 57 states).
Fox News analyst Juan Williams noted that Obama “has been unable to get a firm grip on white Democrats. He has won a majority of these voters in only six states,” with Clinton defeating “Obama among white voters in key states such as California, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina,” amassing “57% of white Democrats since” Super Tuesday in February. Obama can’t “get more than 30% of Catholic or working-class white voters in a big state such as Pennsylvania.” And we haven’t even touched upon his problem with Hispanic voters. Let’s see: Aside from the white vote in general, Obama can’t get the downscale vote, nor the working-class vote, nor the women’s vote, nor the Catholic vote, nor the senior vote, nor the union household vote, nor the Hispanic vote — just what kind of Democrat is this they’re nominating??? But he does have the black vote. No Democrat’s ever done that.

And in more good news for Obama, he’s on course to getting creamed next week in Kentucky as well, where the latest poll (Research 2000) has Hillary up 27 percentage points over Obama — 58 percent to 31 percent. If Obama’s the nominee, he goes on to lose to Bush III (John McCain) by 25 percentage points in what the press keeps calling the Best Election Environment For Democrats In Decades. Kentucky has backed the winner in November in every race going back to 1964.
Putting on a brave face, Gallup tried to explain away Obama’s miserable showing among core Democrats by insisting that his “current level of support among white voters (and other subgroups) in a head-to-head matchup against John McCain is no worse than John Kerry’s margin of support among (key subgroups) against George W. Bush,” which was no worse than Al Gore’s margin against George W. Bush, which was no worse than Dukakis’s margin against elder Bush, which was no worse than Mondale’s margin against Reagan and no worse than Carter’s margin against Reagan and no worse than McGovern’s margin against Nixon and no worse than Humphery’s margin against Nixon. Humphery, McGovern, Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry. (If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I see a pattern emerging here.)
Gallup bases its don’t worry, nothing to see here, “no worse than Kerry” fantasy numbers for Obama on their daily tracking poll, not actual votes, because people would never ever lie to pollsters. Even polls of actual voters — exit polls — have such a stellar track record. Exit polls had Obama winning Ohio by 2 points, so Hillary won by 10 points. Exit polls had Obama-Hillary “too close to call” in Pennsylvania, so Hillary won by almost 10 points. Exit polls had the race in California “too close to call” — Hillary won by 8 points. Exit polls had Obama winning by 5 points in New Jersey — Hillary romped to victory by double-digits. Exit polls had Obama defeating Hillary in New Hampshire by 4 points — she won by 2 points. Obama won New Mexico by 6 points in exit polls but lost by 1 point in the real election. Exit polls had Obama winning Arizona by 6 points — Hillary won by 8. Obama won Massachusetts by 2 points in exit polls — but lost by 15 points. Obama won the exit polls in Texas by 2 points and lost to Hillary by 4 points. In Rhode Island, Hillary and Obama were tied in exit polls — Obama lost by 18 points. The lame-o pollsters use the excuse that these polls were “unweighted” — and by “weighting” they mean ‘fixing’ them to match actual results.
But even if you compare apples to apples, a Gallup poll of “likely voters” taken May 2-4, 2004, had Kerry leading Bush. Gallup polls in February of 2004 had Kerry defeating Bush by 12 points. A March 2004 Gallup poll had Kerry defeating Bush, 50 percent to 44 percent. A June 2004 Gallup poll had Kerry leading Bush, 49 percent to 43 percent. Kerry the Irresistible-Unstoppable-Frenchy-”Vote”-Factory was still “winning” in July 2004! Kerry, 50 percent, washed-up/has-been Bush, 45 percent.

If you whip out a map and look at the border counties of southwest Pennsylvania and southeast Ohio, then West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and the small towns of Virginia where they ‘cling to their guns, religion and xenophobia,’ “the traditions that sustain us,” as Obama famously put it (showing his staggering skill with these voters), you’re looking at the burial ground dug up to inter the rotting ‘Rat Party corpse this November. Without West Virginia, it’s president Al Gore in 2000. Bush the washed-up/has-been carried it again in ‘04, this time by 13 points against the Massachusetts Brahmin with the fake-o “populist” message. Bill Clinton carried it in ‘92 and ‘96 and you’d have to go back to 1916 to find the last chap who made it to the White House without West Virginia. And if you check the pantheon of illustrious losers who lost West Virginia from James M. Cox forward, none of them were ever black. The good folks of West Virginia just have this habit of backing the winner. After November, Obamarugula will be back in the Senate voting “present” for another two years, so say hello to President John McCain.
Anyway, that’s...
My Two Cents
