Well, I am going to be an ass.
This sounds good, and by itself might be enough to make me vote McCain.
BUT
This is about the seventh or eighth time I've gotten over my frustration and come back on the reservation...only to see him immediately do something stupid like hop on board with globaloney warming and La Raza crowd.
My thinking is coming down to this - John McCain may be the better short term tactical solution, but what about the long term? What happens to the GOP when it has to back up four years of Maverick's Schwarzenegger-esque program? How does that compare to what happens when they have the Empty Suit or Satan's Prom Queen in office to galvanise them?
I don't know. I'm getting a bit fatigued with John's Lucy-with-the-football routine.

He’s 71 years old and spent nearly six years in a Vietnamese communist prison camp. Do you really think he’ll survive one term, much less two? That’s why we conservatives need to get together somehow and let him know he should pick one of us as a running mate!

Is anyone foolish enough the think he wouldn't do so again once safely ensconsed in the White House with a hostile Democratic Congress clamouring for a "mainstream" SCOTUS nominee?

It's true, if we're going to think about judges then we don't really have any options. The thing we need to figure out is, is Barak Obama going to be the next George McGovern or the next Jimmy Carter. As much as some are bemoaning the state of the GOP in a post President McCain world, I think I'd rather Obama be the next McGovern.
There will be other ways to exercise some sort of grassroots restraint on President McCain. The places where he differs with the interests of Americans are all hot button issues. Bush wasn't able to get immigration through because of the grassroots, and McCain will have the same problem.
And the GOP was never really a conservative party any more than the Democrats were. They were always parasitic politicians first, and conservatives second. It's just that we've all stopped giving them a pass on it.
Unfortunately our system is thoroughly broken, and just electing someone isn't enough anymore. Once we put them in office we need to continually hound and berate them to keep them on the right path. The interests of those in the government, and the interests of the American people are no longer the same. We will only be able to keep them in line through constant diligence.

I’ll make it easier for you. I’m voting against the dem party and once the dem party can’t get a dog catcher in office, that’s when I expect the Repuplican Party to finally stop pandering to the libs.
Hate to break it to you but we are not a conservative country so true conservatives have a tough time getting elected.

McCain’s “beliefs” are subject to change without notice. He has an anti-gun history. Anybody remember the “Gun Show Loophole” cr@p?
So, it depends on his Vice President. McCain is OLD. He is not likely to last two entire terms. If he picks a good VP, one that we’d like to see as President, we should vote for him, simply to position a good prospect for the next term.
If he picks some RINO type, to heck with him.

Perhaps, if we push just the “gun” issue, ol’ Johnnie Maverick won’t realize that this is THE worldview defining issue that will go against everything else he supports.
Individual gun rights are a “flag” factor for all other ideology. If you support individual gun rights, you support most things “conservative”, because you believe that the power belongs to the individual, not the gov’t.

Unfortunately for all of we who are conservative, this article is absolutely true. It’s McCain appointing, or 2-3 new Ginsberg clones. No matter his statement about Ginsberg being good, he won’t appoint another of her.
This and WOT are the issues for me.

The GOP is finished.
Long term ,look to create and support another party which more appropriately represents the rights of Americans.
In the meantime, McCain is the only acceptable alternative to the twin horrors of Obama and Hillary.
