SMOKE NAZIS On the March in: Chicago
Smoke Nazis in the Chicago area rolled over the right of free association, when they forced attendees to the Chicagoland International Pipe and Tobacciana Show to go outside to smoke.
At the Chicagoland International Pipe & Tobacciana Show in St. Charles, IL, attendees have been told that, due to a statewide smoking ban that went into effect in January, they may not light up even though theirs is a private gathering of only willing participants. This, despite the fact that the conventioneers bent over backwards to try to reach an accommodation.
There was a time--years in the past--when one could volunteer for the American Cancer Society fund raisers without feeling like a fascist. Now, the ACS is one of the leading components of the Nanny State. Mike Grady, the ACS's Illinois director of public policy, illustrated the Cancer Society's belief that they are on the side of right--and your rights be damned.
"This is the first time we've seen such a blatant attempt . . . to actually undermine the law through legal sophistry. We're very happy with the outcome. This is the perfect example that the law is being enforced."
Some officials are more insufferable than--cancer? At least in Illinois, the smoking ban was passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. They can be held accountable for their actions in the next election.
In many locales, smoking bans are administered by Health Departments and Health Boards: groups of unelected officials who can write citations, levy fines and, in some cases, order jail time for offenders. In these cases, voters have no recourse.

Smoke Nazis will not stop--even if every smoker quit today. They would only transfer their need to control and regulate to another behavior, another cause.

Indian Casinos are the only place in Washington State you can have a beer and a cigar. Needless to say business is booming. I think it’s very ironic that the only people who are really free in the state are the Indians.
Good for them!

I know too many people who smoke who HAVE NOT gotten cancer to have faith in the reports anymore.
There is a population of people who never smoked who get lung cancer- can we conclude that NOT smoking causes cancer? Of course not.
Everything in moderation.
Oh and I quit a long time ago. I am not suggesting I am convinced it is healthy, I just don’t believe the nazi do-gooders anymore

Nazis all! You're right; but it's a little easier to swallow knowing that at least the legislature and governor are Smoke Nazis of a representative kind--able to be voted out and face the wrath of the voters.

Does going into combat increase the premature death rate of the population that goes into combat?
Yes.
Does smoking increase the premature death rate of the population that smokes?
Yes.
Am I going to tell people that they cannot risk their lives if they want to?
No.

Smoking is unquestionably a bad habit, but the issue of second-hand exposure is hardly settled as a matter of science. The evidence is, well, hazy. Under such circumstances, free people could normally be entrusted to reach voluntary agreements and mutually satisfactory arrangements. But, no. The desire for control over other people’s lives and resources (a pretty bad habit, too) translates into taxation, then regulation, then punitive law, and finally to the use of police state power.
