GOP Stunned By Loss in Mississippi
RealClear Politics ^ | 5/14/2008 | Reid Wilson

In a major blow to national Republicans, a Mississippi congressional seat that once voted for President Bush by a twenty-five point margin elected a Democrat on Tuesday. Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers beat out Republican candidate Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, by a 54%-46% margin, a spread that several Republican strategists on Capitol Hill characterized as a startling wake-up call for a party in dire straits.

Voters cast ballots for the fourth time in three months for the seat, vacated when Republican Roger Wicker was appointed to fill the remainder of Senator Trent Lott's term. After winning the primary and the runoff election, Childers came within 410 votes of winning the first round of the special election against Davis on April 22, beating the Republican by a 49%-46% margin.

No use undermining your arguments with exaggerations and distortions.

This whole thread is nothing but exaggerations and distortions.

Armed revolution?? Please...

You all think the economy is in shambles because gas prices are high? Jeez, what would happen if supply gets constricted and we're back to lines at the stations? Does nobody here remember what it was like in 1980? I do, and we're a long way from that point.

People (especially those on fixed incomes) are finding their budgets stretched thin? Welcome to real life. Our current standard of living is unbelievably distorted compared to the rest of the world, and even to that experienced by our own parents and grandparents, and yet the spoiled children of this generation start crying and throwing hyperbole about whenever the slightest whiff of trouble arises.

Yes, socialism is a creeping disease and must be fought against at all costs. But the war for the soul of America is far from over as most here would suggest. This country has survived a devestating civil war, two world wars, and 4 years of Jimmah Carter. Get some historical perspective people, grow a spine, and be ready to put your money where your mouth is.

If you truly believe in the value of conservatism you'll understand the fight is not for you but for the future generations of this great nation.

Where are the movement Conservatives?

Surely NOT on on FR.

Just read thru these threads, most are obviously Democrats.

As evidenced by their glee, and no offers of ideas to help.

I think Conservatives need to meet on another forum, or start a new one.

“This Not Voting crap is pure stupidity and child like.”

Or we could vote for McCain who all but supports the fairness doctrine, is funded by Soros, blocked conservative appointments and made it easier for Rats to do so, and has done more than any other American politician to shut us up.

Wake up. The MS loss had nothing to do with RINO politics. It had everything to do with Mississippians wanting a generic “change” of brands.

A change of brands because of RINOism. The Republican brand has been tarnished because moderates have run the party into the ground. Nominating McCain is the last straw. He is suppressing voter turnout. The base is demoralized. Are the Republicans so stupid as to not know how disliked McCain is by average Americans?

The guy they ran in Mississippi wasn’t a RINO. The fact is, the swing voters can be idiots, and they’re acting like idiots right now. We’re simply going to have to buckle down, and ride through the coming darkness.

I attribute the rise in food prices to the oil prices and I blame this on the Democrats.

These same Mississippians who voted for the Democrat WILL VOTE FOR McCain in the general. I can guarantee you that.

And so the bleeding continues. I'm sorry, but the thought of McCain winning in Nov. doesn't comfort me one bit.

McCain will win the district Davis just lost by 15 points come the general. Mark it down. There are many reasons for this...

Hey, I want a more conservative party. I just don’t think the country is ready to vote for what it percieves as anything Republican (lite, rino, conservative or otherwise) at the present moment. John McCain has a shot, not because of his policies (which are rino) but because he is seen as a maverick...something outside the brand....

I agree that the party needs to soul search. It needs to go back to its optimism in the individual. Not the visceral anti-government finger pointing (or the touchy-feely social-program-sponsoring we see under W). It needs a platform that celebrates the greatness of the American people as individuals—appeal to our greatness, our affinity for the liberty to do what we want privately, not under the yoke of a nanny state or over-regulated markets.

I am afraid we may need several years of Democrat beuracracy/free-handout-creation/collectivism, to remind voters why Reagan won 49 out of 50 states.

You are so correct. Reagan taught conservatives that you must present a positive program. We should learn never again to run elections on the basis of being against the opponents. Our problem is that the GOP has no coherent program. McCain is running as a leftist and some of the most respected party leaders are running as conservatives. This is a recipe for disaster.

Agree to an extent...though the thought of Obama, a strong democrat house and a 60 seat democratic congress ought to give you the chills.

“Hello Socialism”

Socialism is the tip of the iceberg for what the Democrats have planned. Goodbye US sovereignty. Say hello to your new masters at the UN. Goodbye, talk radio. Say hello to your new masters at Air America, via the Fairness Doctrine. Goodbye, Second Amendment. Say hello to “collective rights”.

This country... and the world... is in for a wave of darkness and evil not seen since the 1930’s and 40’s.

Heh, heh. I kind of equate the term “socialism” with everything you wrote above.

Ugly days ahead I am afraid.

But as an American optimist, I think the gleeful press pronouncements that the party of Reagan is dead are a bit premature.

Maybe the country needs a dose of reality...the thought of Pelosi, Reed and Obama is chilling enough...but nothing could be better for social and economic conservatives than to have them run the country for 4 years.

They a pissed at Republicans for the war and the economy. It is that simple.

You're making far too much sense to be posting here. Don't you know that whenever one of our guys loses it can't be because the voters rejected what he represented, it's because he was a RINO? RINO, RINO, RINO, that's the pat FR answer for when conservatives lose.

Well, wake up, people. We're losing these contests not because of RINO, but because people are pissed off about how they perceive things to be, and they express this by voting against anyone who lines up with who they think is "in power". It's stupid because the 'Rats are really the ones "in power". But they think right away of the President and using guilt-by-association the sheeple will vote against whomever they think is an ally of Bush. The 'Rats and the media have so inoculated the sheeple that the reflex action is to vote against whoever has the "R" after their name. For many in the elecorate, it's all about "change", never mind what that "change" might be. That's why an empty-suit Alinksy socialist like Obama is on the brink of being the nominee of a major political party. That couple with playing the race card as a shield against anyone daring to question what that "change" is may be enough to sweep him into office, along with maybe a 2:1 'Rat majority in the House and 60-40 in the Senate, essentially a blank check for the Fabian socialists that Obama personifies. Watch for it to happen, unless we in the opposition get our cats together and stop destroying ourselves, and recognize who the real threat is.

People don’t tune in until the last minute

I think it is pretty clear here that the PERCEPTION of being a RINO is what gave this race to a DINO.

We get it.

The RNC does not get it.

Then again this RNC though Dewey was a lock.
