Can anyone give me a reason to be optimistic about this fall? Sure, McCain could pull off a win if Obama killed his lover or something, but we’re still going to be facing a very far-left Congress. Everything is going to be discarded in favor of a lite form of marxism and universal healthcare. The Left won’t stop until they’ve trashed everything from the Constitution to our latest reconnaissance satellite program. All in the name of “the people”. God help us all.
That is a pretty famous Teddy Roosevelt quotation. And perhaps G.W. Bush will be judged by his accomplishments. But my point is that any blame for his reputation dragging down the GOP belongs on those who let his reputation be besmerched.
The Dems are going to have 57 or 58 senators (can actually get 60, if everything goes right for them) and 255-180 (I hope not 270-165, but even this may happen) majority in the House. About what it was in 1993-94, before the Gingrich takeover.
GOP gained 54 seats in 1994 election, and now all these seats are coming back.
Even if Obama somehow manages to lose in November, all McCain will be able to do in the next 4 years is to veto some bills, and even some of these vetos will be overriden. Or he can simply go along and try to moderate the Rangel/Dingell/Pelosi-run Congress. And the GOP will still be percieved as being in power and get blamed for the economic troubles (which are pretty much given, for a decade or longer).
If Obama is elected, the Dems are on the clock. Who knows how much time they got? UK’s Labor is on its way out, but it took them 10+ years to self-destruct. The GOP here did it in 12. If the economy is lousy, the Dems may be on the way out in 2014. Maybe Obama will even lose reelection in 2012.
In any case, I don’t feel compelled to vote for McCain. Why waste GOP clock on somebody who is not even a Republican.
I kind of agree with you. Under any kind of carbon credit scheme, energy prices are going to quadruple, and I don't want the GOP to be tagged with any of that. If it happens under an Obama presidency and a 60% Democrat Congress, the Republicans cannot be blamed for the mess and would be poised for a big comeback.
I have to say, ubaldus, that what you said makes the most sense of anything I've read all night. This may be a time for “political Judo” - let the Democrats momentum carry them right over the edge and let them have full ownership of all the problems that are coming, and that they will cause.
What the left would like more than anything else is for a weak, centrist Republican like McCain to be the President while they pass mass illegal alien amnesty, the largest tax increases in history, the biggest gutting of the military in history, and the largest government takeover of private enterprise in history, because then they could say “it was all bipartisan”, while conservatives get more and more forlorn. At this point I'd say let Barack, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest own it. In four years they may get to replace three liberal Supreme court justices with three more - not great but not a disaster. This alone is NOT the reason to give them McCain as the front man for their master plan.
I'm already going into “bunker” mentality - this will be the Carter years all over again but probably a lot worse. The stock market will retreat to the mid 5000 (Dow) level as the Democrat economic policies take hold. Gas will touch the $7 and $8 per gallon ranges, and shortages will occur. There will be accidents and mass casualties among the armed forces as they are not properly funded.
America will be sick and appear to be dying, but it will be 100% the Democrats fault.
I hate for this type of post to be my first one back, but I guess I'm just in a pretty gloomy mood right now.
One thing I know for sure though is that McCain is NOT the guy we can trust to stand up to the liberal tsunami - in fact he'd probably join whatever they propose and put the Republican brand on it too - just so whatever Congressional seats the R's have left in 2010 and 2012 can be lost too.
Has this country ever seen a 75+ Senate and 350+ House going to one party? We might pretty soon. And then after that the old “democracies last about 200 to 250 years” rule may go into effect.

Roberts and Alito are Supreme Court Justices that were appointed by Bush. Your translation is a bit off, so its a little hard to understand
Not only did pundits and rank and file alike allow Bush to be trashed by Dems, they joined in the trashing because they in their own way began to despise (despise doesn’t mean hate, actually, it just means to lack regard for, to dismiss, not value, etc.) the man.
No, they didn’t join in trashing him on the SAME issues as Dems...to the contrary they defended him on THOSE issues. But where they were upset with him they couldn’t seperate their upset on a particular matter or several with his basic worth as a man or as a President in other areas.
Somebody said on here that Bush was terrible and accomplished nothing on anything other than tax cuts and Roberts and Alito. Wow is that ever a whopper. Talk about amnesia.
It is also argued that Bush didn’t effectively defend himself, therefore he had no one to blame but himself. Everybody else is blameless. Wow, what a dumb assertion. But, hey, whatever floats your boat and allows yourself to feel better by flogging one man some more after he’s already flogged into bloody, tiny little bits of flesh.
One thing I do agree with that was said is that a lot of people today are so ignorant I would not be surprised if they are unaware that the Dems control both houses of congress and that Liberal big government policies are killing this nation. Hence, the GOP “brand” has become a whipping boy for every frustration, much of it in ignorance and lashing out blindly.
Liberal Republicans in the Senate have helped the Dems stymie us at just about every turn in doing desperately needed things or stopping bad things.
But conservative Republicans are being thrown aside in favor of MORE OF THE SAME THING that is already destroying this nation.
President Bush has been eaten alive by the MSM and hate. Acquiesced to and sometimes aided and abetted by pundits and rank and file alike on our side.
Has he erred in ways that have made him subject to attacks from his own side? Of course. So did Ronald Reagan. Yes, he did. I remember when he was being villified by the most conservative among us.

Uh, Bush hasn't changed. He's the same guy now as he was when he was elected in 2000. It's just back then Republican s did't want to see it.
Personally I wish I could go back in time and change my votes in 2000 and 2004. I can't so I just have to console myself with the fact that I will never vote for another Bush again. And I will never vote for the lesser of two evils again.
If that means I need to write-in or vote third party for president from now on that's fine with me.
As far as the democrats in these special election districts being conservative that may be true on social issues but don't count on it when it comes to economic issues. These “conservatives” just elected a democrat who just promised them free money in one form (welfare checks, agricultural subsidies, a job, etc.) or another.
Also don't forget that once these blue dog democrats get to DC they will vote as they are told to vote by the party power structure, which is to the left. The power structure will allow them to vote to the right on meaningless bills here and there. This way the congressman can go home and claim to constituents during reelection time to have voted against Kennedy or the little congressional black crybaby caucus 20% of the time. This “proves” they are independent and not a shill for the America haters.
One of the final straws with GWB was his sacking of the two Border Patrol agents as requested by his “good man” Johnny Sutton. Even if the agents should have been dismissed, where is the justice in their case?

Another “safe” Senate seat that could fall is in TX, where Senator Cornyn is largely unrecognized by most voters because of his low profile. This has been a Republican seat since June 1961 too.
We don't have one. That's the problem.
There’s no way he gets to pick conservative judges (not that he would anyway) with the Dems firmly in control of the Senate. A conservative nominee won’t have a prayer.
