For an institution (the RCC) that puts their church traditions on a par with the Bible, and interprets the Genesis creation account mystically, what would you expect. The Bible says mankind is made in the image of God. Thats good enough for us Biblicists, but not for the RCC, however.

This is nothing new. I have a book by a priest, published back in the 1950s, that said the same thing. The possibility of alien life has never been denied by the Catholic Church.

There have been numerous articles by priests discussing the possible status of such aliens. According to the articles, these possible statuses include (but are not limited to):

• never fallen, thus not in need of redemption;
• mortal, not having immortal souls, and living only in natural happiness;
• fallen, but Christ's redemption made known to them somehow;
• fallen, and redeemed independently of humanity

There have been numerous science fiction stories dealing with the theological statuses of aliens. Some of the stories were pretty good, some not good. Science fiction, like everything else, is subject to Sturgeon's Law: Ninety percent of everything is crap.
