Drudge Report, Fox News falsely smear Gore
Grist ^ | May 10, 2008 | Brad Johnson

Posted on 05/12/2008 9:18:13 AM PDT by cogitator

Excerpted below:

... On May 6, Jeff Poor wrote for the Business & Media Institute (BMI) a story entitled, "Al Gore Calls Myanmar Cyclone a 'Consequence' of Global Warming," which was subsequently linked on the Drudge Report. Poor claims:

"Using tragedy to advance an agenda has been a strategy for many global warming activists, and it was just a matter of time before someone found a way to tie the recent Myanmar cyclone to global warming."

Poor wrote that Gore said in an interview on National Public Radio, "The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China -- and we're seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming."

In fact, the audio clip has been doctored and the conclusion that "Al Gore Calls Myanmar Cyclone a 'Consequence' of Global Warming" is false. Here are the facts:

# Gore Said Myanmar Cyclone Is Not A Consequence Of Global Warming. The BMI headline ignores that Gore says in the interview that "any individual storm can't be linked singularly to global warming -- we've always had hurricanes."

# Gore Properly Described Relationship Between Storms And Global Warming. In the interview, Gore discussed Nargis and the devastating storms that struck China in 2006 (Typhoon Saomai) and Bangladesh in 2007 (Cyclone Sidr). He goes on to say that "the emerging consensus" among climate scientists is that the "the trend toward stronger and more destructive storms appears to be linked to global warming, and specifically to the impact of global warming on higher ocean temperatures in the top couple of hundred feet of the ocean, which drives convection energy and moisture into these storms and makes them more powerful."

* Story Presents False Clip Of Interview. The audio clip included with the online story includes two segments that have been spliced together, out of order, to mislead the listener as to Gore's actual meaning. The actual transcript (see below) makes it clear Gore was saying that the "consequences" of global warming we're seeing was the melting of the polar ice cap, which is unequivocally due to anthropogenic climate change.

* Business & Media Institute Is Part Of Right-Wing Message Machine. BMI is a right-wing "free-enterprise" front group that is part of Brent Bozell's conservative media machine, the Media Research Center.

The actual transcript reveals that Gore was speaking in response to a question about conservative pastor John Hagee's claim in a 2006 interview with Terry Gross that "Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans."

cog: melting of the polar ice cap, which is unequivocally due to anthropogenic climate change.

dead: Nonsense

Gotta agree with dead. You can't seriously use the word unequivocally while putting forth some theory for the southern hemisphere which is not melting overall. Obviously that would get rid of the unequivocally. Also why use climate change, why not global warming? Climate change is natural. I agree some global warming is due to man, but we don't know how much. Cooling and warming are also natural and ongoing.

The problem is -— nothing was doctored. Don’t be so gullible. There is no reason to “stand behind Gore”— grudgingly or otherwise. He is the idiot we knew him to be.

Al's Still Sore believes Global Warming affects all storms, it does. The cyclone is part of that set, therefore the statement is true.

The question is does man have any measureable affect on climate, which is impossible to measure because it is below the natural variability of the whole climate system. Man's contribution is a lugnut on the spare tire on the vehicle of global cliamate.

Besides that Al's Still Sore, the great global gasbag, could use a good smearing, he'd just be getting back some of what he has dished out over the years... Just ask Dr. Roger Revelle, the man that A$$ claims changed his life by teaching him about CO2, only A$$ misunderstood, and when Dr. Revelle called him on it, A$$ smeared him. Or ask S. Fred Singer, or William Happer, or Hugh Ellsaesser. Just a few, of a lifetime of such smears, suppressions, and cohersions.

Bring on the smears, A$$ is owed a million more.

Exactly! As a matter of undeniable FACT, something the GW chicken-little panic mongerers love to ignore, when the ice caps on Earth were shrinking, so were the caps on Mars. Global warming is driven by solar activity which, last time I checked with my commonsense meter, is NOT affected by my SUV, or cow flatus, or any other asinine thing (pun sort-of intended).

Additionally, as was posted on FR some days agao, it is a FACT that temperatures, which were never as high as during midieval times have, for the last three years, stopped increasing and are level or have been dropping (depending on the source). Seems like the current global warming "thing" is nothing more than the same idiocy which, in 1974, caused the chicken-little panic mongerers to be crying and gnashing their teeth over global COOLING!

This year, the Antarctic ice mass is larger in area than any other time since it was measured (they started keeping track about 200 years ago). The snow melt from the Rocky Mountains is going to be WAY above normal to the point that anticipation of flooding is occurring. There are 35 egregious errors, or lies (depending on whether you believe Gore actually believes his BS), in his verdamt "movie". The incontrovertible FACT (there I go again) is that man has no significant impact on global warming.

To support "manmade" global warming requires the suspension of thought, the same as required to be a liberal-socialist democrat, a darwinist, someone who denies the WWII holocaust, someone who thinks there is no islamic holy war on anyone who will not convert to islam, and any number of other falsehoods!

There, THAT ought to sweeten the "discussion" a tad!

Cogitator has been in Al Gore's back pocket for a long time.

His facts don't stand up to much scrutiny and he disappears when challenged.

He needs more people like you to join the campaign to stop humans from scorching the planet.

That’s a good thread, I read it a while back. Basically Judith was mostly arguing about what Kerry Emmanual said or did not say in his paper and whether that represented a 180 turn like some represented it. I believe it was a switch and away from his previous warming to hurricane-strength position. But he certainly kept some connection so it was not a 180.

So in other words, while he didn't state specifically "this particular storm was caused by global warming" he did imply that it was.

Yep, that's Al Gore.

The phrase “melting of the polar ice cap” refers to what’s happening in the Arctic. “melting of the polar ice caps” would cover both ends. I was indicating that the use of “unequivocally” is pretty much ridiculous. The most likely main cause, clearly, but the linkage is not unequivocal and never will be.

The most likely main cause, clearly...

Still nonsense, but getting warmer (so to speak.)

The most likely cause of variations in the size of our polar caps from year to year is the cyclical nature of our planetary weather patterns, that have been occurring for billions of years.

An Al Gore Speech just after the Katrina Hurricane:

Transcript of Al Gore's speech at the Sierra Summit, September 9, 2005

-snip-

There are scientific warnings now of another onrushing catastrophe. We were warned of an imminent attack by Al Qaeda; we didn't respond. We were warned the levees would break in New Orleans; we didn't respond. Now, the scientific community is warning us that the average hurricane will continue to get stronger because of global warming. A scientist at MIT has published a study well before this tragedy showing that since the 1970s, hurricanes in both the Atlantic and the Pacific have increased in duration, and in intensity, by about 50 %. The newscasters told us after Hurricane Katrina went over the southern tip of Florida that there was a particular danger for the Gulf Coast of the hurricanes becoming much stronger because it was passing over unusually warm waters in the gulf. The waters in the gulf have been unusually warm. The oceans generally have been getting warmer. And the pattern is exactly consistent with what scientists have predicted for twenty years. Two thousand scientists, in a hundred countries, engaged in the most elaborate, well organized scientific collaboration in the history of humankind, have produced long-since a consensus that we will face a string of terrible catastrophes unless we act to prepare ourselves and deal with the underlying causes of global warming. [applause] It is important to learn the lessons of what happens when scientific evidence and clear authoritative warnings are ignored in order to induce our leaders not to do it again and not to ignore the scientists again and not to leave us unprotected in the face of those threats that are facing us right now. [applause]

-snip-

Here's what I think we here understand about Hurricane Katrina and global warming. Yes, it is true that no single hurricane can be blamed on global warming. Hurricanes have come for a long time, and will continue to come in the future. Yes, it is true that the science does not definitively tell us that global warming increases the frequency of hurricanes - because yes, it is true there is a multi-decadal cycle, twenty to forty years that profoundly affects the number of hurricanes that come in any single hurricane season. But it is also true that the science is extremely clear now, that warmer oceans make the average hurricane stronger, not only makes the winds stronger, but dramatically increases the moisture from the oceans evaporating into the storm - thus magnifying its destructive power - makes the duration, as well as the intensity of the hurricane, stronger.

http://www.sierraclub.org/pressroom/speeches/2005-09-09algore.asp

Al Gore may not blame a single hurricane for "Global Warming," But he buts his own statements saying that they are more deadlier than before because the ocean waters are warmer.

So did warmer waters cause the Myanmar cyclone to be more intense? If Gore believes so, therefore he believes "Global Warming" did cause more death than usual than a cyclone before the time of "Global Warming," and as of consequence, "Global Warming" did cause the Myanmar disaster.

New MIT study validates hurricane prediction

This is ablosultely amazing! The new "study" actually showed Kerry to be wrong, and showed that scientists are NOWHERE near understanding the link between global warming and storm activity as the findings were radically different than the ones from just 2 years ago.

And despite all this, we now quote this article to prove anything?

Hurricane expert reconsiders global warming's impact

"One of the most influential scientists behind the theory that global warming has intensified recent hurricane activity says he will reconsider his stand.

The hurricane expert, Kerry Emanuel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, unveiled a novel technique for predicting future hurricane activity this week. The new work suggests that, even in a dramatically warming world, hurricane frequency and intensity may not substantially rise during the next two centuries.

The research, appearing in the March issue of Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, is all the more remarkable coming from Emanuel, a highly visible leader in his field and long an ardent proponent of a link between global warming and much stronger hurricanes."
