Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr is expected to announce that he's running for president as a Libertarian.
His candidacy would be a wild card in the White House race that many believe would hurt Republican Sen. John McCain.
Barr had scheduled a news conference Monday. He first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner

I wonder if his nomination quest in the LP will go better than Alan Keyes’ in the CP?
I am so frustrated with McCain that I am giving serious consideration to voting for Barr (assuming he is nominated.)
Barr’s always given me the creeps. There’s something about that mustache. He looks like he should play Barty Crouch in a Harry Potter movie.
They should run together for the Green Party nomination.
Any dilution of the republican vote means a victory to the Rats... Remember Ross Perot????
I’m know McCain fan but I’ll hold my nose and pull the lever
If Barr gets the nomination there will be one conservative in the race.
Im know no McCain fan but Ill hold my nose and pull the lever
Election ‘08 is going to be a freakin circus and we’ll get to vote for which clown we want to represent us.
O, joy.
He’s got my vote... Unfortunately, the liberal McCain running on the republican ticket will steal the election from him. McCain should drop out for the good of the conservative movement...
I will vote third party only if my state race is close.
But right now, I don’t see a third party candidate that I’d want to vote for. McCain is the only one who will not surrender Iraq. Even the CP intends to surrender a war that we’re clearly winning.
What is Barr’s position on Iraq?
Bob Barr, though he is a libertarian, reminds me of one of the characters who were members of the Illinois Nazi Party from The Blues Brothers.
Wise people will stay as far away from Bob Barr as possible.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Hmmm. I like the Libertarian party for almost everything and especially government finance and personal freedom, but the loosey-goosey attitude on National Defense may be a dealbreaker for me. For example — Ron Paul may be right about it being a mistake to go into Iraq in the first place, but now that we’re there we need to make sure the job is finished, and here’s where the Libertarian party wants to cut losses and bail.
That said, a protest vote against Juan McCain is sooooo tempting. He so obviously hates core conservatives, and if he’s tweaking us now with kissy face on La Raza and global warming (when he wants as many votes as possible), what’s he gonna do when he’s in power? Man, I hate this election year.
This is all pretty funny but repubs have made their own bed. Many people who consider themselves libertarians have been voting for pubbies largely because of the two groups philosophy of fiscal restraint and the reality that the Libertarian Presidential candidates don’t stand a chance. I know that there are a lot of freepers who think libertarians are all evil yada yada yada... but when you consider that the 2000 election was won by a few hundred votes that policy of demonizing libertarians doesn’t seem very smart. McCain is probably going to lose a lot of those thousands of votes. For that matter he’s going to lose a lot of republican votes too since he’s basically a liberal and from what I can see the sort of people he would nominate to the USSC are not acceptable. If the pubbie pres won’t nominate conservative judges and considering their spending track record and the recent ascendancy of the country clubbers in the party there’s little reason to prefer McCain over the others. A lot of conservatives are going to stay home. Libertarians won’t cross over. The Republican Party has only itself to blame.
> I remember when the GOP picked McCain, the Libertarian party sent the GOP a funeral wreath. How fitting.....
I love it! Do you have a pointer to the story? I so want this to be true.
Barr is such a stupid prick. Carrying water for the Bolsheviks in the ACLU. I despise him.
I think I’ll take the morning off to start practicing saying the words, “President Obama.”
“Hes got my vote...”
And Obama’s got the White House

Here it is. Says a McCain nomination shows the death of small government policies in the RNC.
